How to summary/paraphrase the JA a. Main components of your summary (When developing your written summary DO NOT include the sub-sections in your paper (Example: Title, Intro, Method etc.). It should be an essay/research paper format. Each paragraph should indicate each sub-section listed below without them being listed).

i. Title 1. Always use the title of the JA to title your JA summary, and it should be at the top of the page (centered)

ii. Introduction 1. Use the background information and summary about 2-3 sentences of the main points. In this section, include the observation and hypothesis of the JA. Your summary should be at least five sentences, maybe more if the JAs introduction is long.

iii. Experiment/Methods 1. For your summary, the goal is to balance the need for basic concepts to assist you with your results. All of the statistical tests are NOT significant in your summary. I recommend you locate basic methodical information in the abstract to assist you in your summary. Be brief about three sentences.

iv. Results 1. Summarize just the facts!! Only the data and illustrations used to support your methods summary. You may want to explain the figures used in the JA, to assist you in your summary. Should be about 4-5 sentences.

v. Discussion/Conclusion 1. In your summary of the discussion, you should explain your results collected from the JA. Questions you should look for in the JA to assist you with your summary: a. What the hypothesis correct? b. How was the hypothesis supported based on the results? c. What were some limitations or additional questions they found during their experimentations? d. What was the take-home message of the experimentation? e. All of these questions need to be answered in your summary. f. Should be 4-5 sentences (more if the discussion section is longer for the JA).

vi. Citations (required for JA, ppt, and poster presentations)

1. When summarizing a JA, you should ALWAYS include citations throughout your summary. If you use the references located in the JA, be sure to include them in the reference page page. But, you are only required to reference the one JA that your are reading and summarizing. This is different when citing labs, ppts, and posters…you may have multiple referneces.

2. We will be using CSE (Council of Science Editors) format for citations and work cited pages.

3. Citations allow you to acknowledge the work of others; they also inform the reader.

4. Cite each reference by giving the name(s) of the author(s) followed by the year in which the material published. For each citation, use parentheses to enclose the name and the date. The name is followed by a space, but no comma. Below are the correct ways to cites various references that you may use in the course. Pay close attention to how the CSE style is used within your text.
