The introduction begins with a hook that gets the reader’s attention and establishes the paper’s focus; includes a bridge that clearly connects the hook to the thesis; all necessary terms are defined in your own words; necessary background information is given, including the author and title of the primary text, as well as introductory information about rhetorical appeal(s).

Thesis

Clear, focused, and insightful thesis statement responds to all parts of the prompt; accurately predicts the subject of the paper; states an opinion with which a thoughtful reader could disagree; makes an assertion about how and/or why the writer holds that opinion; predicts supporting points; consists of 1-3 clear, grammatically correct sentences at the end of the introduction. Clearly introduces a rhetorical appeal that the students is arguing is strongest in a particular text.

Body Paragraphs: Organization

Body paragraphs have relevant, opinionated topic sentences and concluding sentences that show clearly what student thinks with regards to which rhetorical appeal is used most successfully; ideas are organized logically; transition words and phrases are used effectively between paragraphs and sentences; each body paragraph has a clear and distinct focus.

Topic sentences supported with abundant and specific evidence from the text; direct quotes (and paraphrases if needed) used effectively; signal phrases used to introduce quotes and paraphrases; quotes cited appropriately; analytical discussion used to show connections between quotes/paraphrase and corresponding topic sentences; argument maintains a balanced perspective and appropriate tone; effectively persuades readers about the overall argument; development sufficient to fully explore the topic in 4 pages.

Consistently clear, complete sentences; sentence-level errors do not distract the reader or distort meaning; a reader can easily understand the writer’s ideas.
