Argumentative/Persuasive Rubric----8-10 pages
First Draft: April 13
Final Draft: TBA
You will compose an argumentative/persuasive research paper. The topic may relate to your major area of study or another societal issue. Please ensure that your topic is as narrow as possible.
It is not necessary to include the annotated bibliography with the first draft, however it MUST be handed in with the final draft.
The essay will use a minimum of 7 sources, but may use up to 15. At least 6 of these sources should come from the databases. Please do not use more than 1 Credo Reference source. Additional scholarly, peer-reviewed sources are welcome.
.
1. Introduction and Conclusion
A strong introduction will contain a clear thesis statement and hook and should preview the structure of the paper. The thesis should indicate an argumentative structure and use the opinion + 3 point structure.
A strong conclusion will somehow restate the thesis, wrap up without depending on simple summary and have some tie to the introduction.
2. Background information
Provide a brief, but informative history/background of the argument. You will probably devote a separate section for this purpose, but you might also filter this information into the body of the essay. Ask yourself what the reader needs to know to understand this topic.
3. Argument
Use logos, ethos and pathos to argue your position. Here, logos is the most important element. Demonstrate truth and use your sources as backup. Always avoid logical fallacies.
4. Opposing Argument
In an argumentative style paper, it is important to recognize the opposing argument. You should use the Rogerian argument when appropriate. However, make sure you work to argue that your position is better OVERALL. At least ONE paragraph should be devoted to disproving the opposing argument.
5. Integration of Sources
Depend on your sources, but be sure to avoid patch writing. Ensure that all writing appears in your own words. Work to “space out” your sources. This means that you should not rely very heavily on only one or two sources. All sources should be used in your in-text citations. Cite as evenly as possible to avoid bias. If you are unable to use a source in your paper, this is an indication that it is not an appropriate source. Omit it and find something else.
6. Grammar/Usage/MLA
Avoid grammar and MLA issues
7. Flow
Avoid awkward transitions between or within sentences and paragraphs
