Paper 1: Theory Paper (40 points) Due 9/26/18

The focus of this paper is to use your chosen age group to illustrate the use of theory in social work. To achieve this you will:

· -  System Theory for middle adulthood

· -  Write a paper which describes the theory, describes how it might fit when applied to your chosen age group, how the theory guides the GIM, and describes the cautions when using the theory with your age group.

· -  This paper should be between 3-5 pages.

o Clear introduction which describes the focus of your paper (lays out your age group and a brief description of your premise of how/why the theory is a good fit for understanding the age group) ( 4 points)

o Clear description of the main components of the theory. (9 pts) o Clear connection to your age group. Here consider how does this theory work particularly well with your age group. What does it suggest a practitioner pay

attention to? This would be a great place to include some articles which demonstrate how this theory has been used in practice with this age group as some examples. (9 pts)

o Describe the cautions/limitations when using this theory. What does a social worker need to be mindful of when using this theory? What do you think it might be missing? What about cultural considerations? Power and privilege, etc. (9 pts)

o Conclusion tying it all together. What is the big take-away message of your paper? (4 points)

o Good grammar, correct spelling, and APA citations used (5 points)

1. Systems theories – Those concepts that emphasize reciprocal relationships between the elements that constitute a whole. These concepts also emphasize the relationships among individuals, groups, organizations, or communities and mutually influencing factors in the environment. Systems theories focus on the interrelationships of elements in nature, encompassing physics, chemistry, biology, and social relationships (general systems theory, ecological perspective, life model, and ecosystems perspective).

Generalist Intervention Model. GIM is a 7-step planned change process. Which are Engagement, Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation, Termination, Follow-up.
