Developing Learning How to Learn Skills
Based upon my reading of Chapter Three and its description of learning how to learn skills, I am currently strong at critical thinking skills while I need to improve on my reading skills. These two skills, out of the mentioned five learning skills, are the ones that I have been strongest and weakest at throughout my learning experiences.
Malcolm Knowles explains in the text that critical thinking, “refers to the ability to consider logically, react, and process information or data in a sophisticated manner.” (Knowles 2017) I hold this skill in the same view as discernment. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1) Being able to break down information and analyze exactly what it is that I am digesting has been key to my military and professional career.
Which leads me to my weakest skill of reading. The pre-test at the beginning of the chapter is one that flattened me even more so as I am already aware of my reading tendencies. I read slow, I often have to read something over twice, I do not take notes from reading to memorize things but notes on where to reference, ultimately I scored high on benefiting from the proactive reading technique.
