“Hamine, S., Gerth-Guyette, E., Faulx, D., Green, B. B., & Ginsburg, A. S. (2015).Impact of (mobile health) mHealth Chronic Disease Management on Treatment Adherence and Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Review. Journal of Medical Internet Research, 17(2), e52.”

The purpose of the article was to explore mobile Health or telemedicine roles and its relation to patients, especially those with chronic disease. The impending technology of mobile Health has potential in improving chronic disease management outcomes as the patient will use gadgets such as blood sugar devices to monitor the level while at home. The mobile Health provides one to one interaction with physicians while at home and enquire the procedure to maintain their conditions. Hence, the article pointed out that the usability, acceptability, and feasibility of telemedicine is a powerful tool for keeping patients involved to their own health condition.

“Kruse, C. S., Krowski, N., Rodriguez, B., Tran, L., Vela, J., & Brooks, M. (2017).Telehealth and patient satisfaction: a systematic review and narrative analysis.BMJ Open, 7(8), e016242.”

The article examines patients satisfaction levels after receiving telehealth program services. The patient survey and information on healthcare database provided efficient and sufficient information to understand the level of telemedicine improvement in public healthcare. Patient-level of satisfaction is measured after undergo through the healthcare services and asked to report on their level of satisfaction about pain management, relation with doctors, quality of care and services and access to the healthcare portal. The research found that patients are satisfied when they are treated with the use of telehealth programs, yet its effectiveness and efficiency varies by the patient's perception.

“Lyles, C. R., Tieu, L., Sarkar, U., Kiyoi, S., Sadasivaiah, S., Hoskote, M., ...&Schillinger, D. (2019). A randomized trial to train vulnerable primary care patients to use a patient portal. J Am Board Fam Med32(2), 248-258.”

In this article, the authors conducted a randomized trial to examine the usefulness of information technology in healthcare in delivering information to patient online. The process is done through the video-like portal to train the patient to understand how well they use them. Even with the implementation of healthcare information technology to improve patient awareness of their condition, there are difficulties in accessing the information due to difficulties in navigating and understanding the way the portal works. The study found that access of health information online was not compatible with patients having limited health literacy due to vulnerability to use the portals. Hence, the portal training must be intensive or improve its usability through education to improve patient awareness of healthcare information technology.

“Patil, R., &Patil, A. (2014).Use of information technology in healthcare sector for improving outcomes. International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology3(269), 2319-2003.”

The authors Patil and Patil in this research evaluate importance of health IT in healthcare setting as well as its impacts on patient’s quality of care along with satisfaction. Similarly, it wasfound IT in healthcare provides advancement in pharmaceutical organizations and related services. The advantage of IT includes extended reach, electronic medical history of the patient, and quick fact assimilation along with prevention of diseases. The association of portable healthcare devices with internet access helps in mHealth and search for healthcare information.

“Piscotty, R. J., Kalisch, B., &Gracey-Thomas, A. (2015).Impact of healthcare information technology on nursing practice: I-HIT and missed nursing care. Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 47(4), 287-293”

The authors, Piscotty, Kalisch and Gracey-Thomas research aimed at examining nurses’ perception about healthcare information technology concerning practices mediating correlation between electronic reminder and nurses missed care. The research found that healthcare information technology is a requirement in hospital setting in receiving Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. Also, nurses reported that there are challenges to implement IT in healthcare programs, documentation, provision of safe and quality care while maintaining cost-effectiveness. However, the study concluded that technology has improved quality of care and decrease cost as it helps to prevent medical errors.

2. Research Title and Purpose

Title

Information Technology (IT) in Healthcare and Patient Engagement

Purpose

The purpose of this descriptive quantitative research is to examine the impact of information technology in health care and patient engagement and ability to access health information medical web portals. A review of the influence of IT platform used in promoting patients engagement and effect in health behavior will be performed to understand how well patient use the health information technology models to develop their own intervention and access to their health history. According to Khatun et al. (2015) study found that IT in healthcare helps to provide a perfect treatment decision, safe and quality care, and presents information on the choice to support a superb response on the health needs that is operative and equitable awareness to deal with health threats. However, despite the implementation of IT in healthcare, most of the patient are reluctant or are not bothered to use the web portal to view their health condition electronically through Telehealth such as mHealth or MEDLINE.

The research form Lyles et al. (2017), on making the online patient portal accessible to all indicated that the rapid expansion access to these portals is glowing yet there is minimal attention focused to vulnerable patients. These patients are the one who has limited literacy in English, health literacy, or people with a disability or mental health problems. The health care outcomes through the accessibility, feasibility, and acceptability of the new technology among patients can be related to the challenges and direction of implementing IT platforms and patient engagement.
