Summary of the studies

The first study was conducted by Cameron et al., published in 2018 and titled 'interventions for preventing falls in older people in healthcare facilities and hospitals'. This study's problem was that falls in healthcare facilities are a leading cause of mortality among elderly people. This study is significant to nursing because the results will reduce cases of falls among the elderly in healthcare facilities. The purpose of this study was to reduce the instances of falls among elderly people. The study's objective was to assess how effective the interventions of reducing falls among the elderly in healthcare facilities were. The researchers aimed to answer the research question, 'how effective were the interventions in place to reduce falls among the elderly in hospitals?' The second study was conducted by Kinoshita et al., published in 2019 and titled 'characteristics of awareness and behavior of medical staff for prevention of falling accidents among patients.' The problem in this study was that falls are among the leading causes of deaths among inpatients. This study is significant to nursing because awareness of medical staff on preventing falling accidents will go a long way in reducing the cases of falls among inpatients. This study's objective was to assess the level of awareness of the medical staff when it comes to preventing fall accidents among patients. In this study, the research question was, 'what is the awareness level and how is the behavior of medical staff aligned with the prevention of falls among patients?' How the articles support my nursing practice issue

The nursing issue I chose was on how to prevent patient falls in healthcare facilities. My PICOT question was on how practical conducting standardized assessment was compared to providing a safe hospital environment to prevent falls among inpatients during their stay at the hospital. The study by Cameron et al. (2018) will answer my PICOT question by explaining existing approaches and suggesting other new ways to prevent falls in hospitals. The study by Kinoshita et al. (2019) will answer my PICOT question by clarifying the level of awareness that medical staff ought to have to prevent falls among patients.

The interventions and comparison groups in these two articles compare to those I identified in my Picot question. In my PICOT, I aim at identifying how providing a safe hospital environment can help reduce falls. This has been addressed in the study by Cameron et al. (2018), which assesses the interventions for preventing falls in healthcare facilities. I also aim to address the effectiveness of assessments in preventing falls in my PICOT. This has been discussed by Kinoshita et al. (2019), who assessed the medical staff's awareness and behavior in preventing falls.

Methods of study

Both articles used quantitative methods. However, the report by Cameron et al. (2018) used archival data searched from healthcare literature for its study. The research was a randomized control trial where 95 such trials were conducted among 138 164 patients. The study by Kinoshita et al. (2019), on the other hand, was a case study conducted using questionnaires. These questionnaires were distributed among 1,670 medical staff who were supposed to conduct a self-evaluation on their awareness and behavior towards preventing falls among patients.

The advantage of using archival data sourced from healthcare literature was that the researchers could get a lot of data to work with quickly. However, the main shortcoming is that there was a high risk of bias because the settings from which the data was sourced were different. The advantage of the case study method is that it allowed the researchers to get detailed information. It is, however, an expensive and time-consuming method of study.

Results of the study

The study by Cameron et al. (2018) found a wide range of interventions used to prevent falls in healthcare facilities. The researchers found that giving vitamin D supplements significantly reduced the cases of falls. Multifactorial interventions were also found to reduce falls in hospitals. It was not confident whether exercise with control reduced the instances of falls. There was also no connection between general medical review and reduction in the cases of falls.

The study by Kinoshita et al. (2019) found that medical staff's awareness and behavior toward preventing falls among patients was relatively low. The study also clarified the characteristics of awareness and behavior that medical staff should have to reduce falls among patients. Due to the low level of awareness, the study found that medical staff must be trained on preventing falls.

The interventions that were identified in the study by Cameron et al. (2018) can be used in nursing practice to reduce the cases of falls among elderly people. This will reduce the instances of falls in healthcare facilities, which has been termed one of the leading causes of death among the elderly. The study by Kinoshita et al. (2019) identified the need for education on how to prevent falls by medical staff. This will also help to reduce the cases of falls in healthcare facilities.

Outcomes comparison

The PICOT question's anticipated outcomes are that conducting a practical assessment of medical staff will help reduce the cases of falls among patients in healthcare facilities. Also, providing a safe hospital environment will help to reduce the instances of falls. Assessment of the interventions put in place by the facilities will help determine which ones are effective and which ones are not, thus reducing the cases of falls.

My anticipated outcomes compare with those from my chosen article. The article by Cameron et al. (2018) assessed the interventions to prevent falls and found that not all interventions are effective. This means that some of the interventions I will examine in my study will be more effective than others. The study by Kinoshita et al. (2019) found that conducting awareness assessment helps identify gaps that can be filled through training, thus reducing falls. This is one of the anticipated outcomes in my study. I am to prove that awareness assessments can help reduce falls among patients.
