Assignment:

Essay 2 is a Rogerian Argument Essay. Your target audience will be those who disagree with your view. You will be required to find common ground—general points of agreement about at least one aspect of the issue. Consider how both you and your readers have an interest in and will benefit from improving the issue. Include evidence to support your view, and show readers how they will benefit from considering your view. Refer to the example Rogerian essays in Practical Argument Chapter 6 (p. 196-199, 224-226, 231-232).

Due dates:

· In order to prepare for researching for the essay, complete The Search for the Skunk Ape Pre-Test, Tutorial, and Post-Test before class on Tues., May 28. REMINDER: As noted on the syllabus, the class meeting on 5/28 will be held in Library Room 222 for the Library Presentation. The presentation will conclude after approximately an hour and fifteen minutes. Use the time following the presentation to complete the CRAAP test assignment and then to work on the draft of your Rogerian essay on your own.

· Complete the “CRAAP test” and submit results (cut and paste into the text box for the assignment) for three potential sources before class on Thursday, May 30. I encourage you to complete this assignment following the Library presentation while the Librarian is available to help you locate sources.

· Draft due (at least 3 pages): Thurs., May 30. Submit to Canvas and bring printout to class.

· Final version due: Tues., June 4. Bring peer review document and draft from peer review to class. Submit final to Essay 2 Canvas drop box before class. Check the Turnitin.com report by clicking on the percentage icon in the submission to be sure all source information is documented correctly.

Requirements:

· The essay requirement is 4-5 pages (4 complete pages minimum not including cover and Reference pages). Please use standard format: Times New Roman 12 point font and 1” margins.

· For a strong essay, follow the guidelines we have discussed and that you have read about in Practical Argument for writing effective intro, body, and concluding paragraphs for an argument essay. Review the information on the pillars or elements of argument in Practical Argument 24-27. Use sources as support for your own ideas and observations. Use specific examples in each body paragraph to illustrate the points in your essay. To avoid overuse of sources, you can also refer to specific examples based on your own knowledge, experience, observation, and analysis. Utilize Rogerian strategy as well as logos, pathos, and ethos in the essay to convince readers.

· Use three to five sources for this essay. The sources must be reliable FGCU Library sources such as journal articles, books, or newspaper articles. Sources need to be smoothly integrated (introduced, connected to the thesis/specific claims in the body paragraphs) and add to the essay in a meaningful way. The sources, depending on your topic, can be from Practical Argument. Do not use Wikipedia, informal blogs, dictionary definitions, or quote sites. You may also use personal experiences or observations in the essay, though these do not count toward the 3-5 sources required.

· Document sources correctly using APA format. To demonstrate an understanding of correct APA documentation, please include a brief quote, a block quote, and a paraphrase. Document sources correctly using APA format. Please follow the documentation format discussed in class and in Little Seagull p. 173-207 (“APA Style”). See the sample pages for APA format (p. 204-207). You do not need an abstract for your essay. Check to be sure your Reference page looks like the example on p. 207 of Little Seagull. Ask if you have questions about what should be documented and/or how a specific type of source should be documented.

Topics:

Use the Essay 2 topic list created in class (found in Canvas Modules section). If you think of another topic, you are required to have it approved by the instructor via email ( [email protected] ) before you write the draft due on Thurs., May 30.
