RN COLLABORATIVE POST REPLY WEEK 1

My current leadership style according to the Foundation of Nursing leadership self-assessment is a combination of transformational and transactional, with a slightly higher score in transformational.  My leadership style impacts my decision making in nursing care because I tend to gravitate toward shared decision-making. I value the input of my colleagues. In my current position as a CN III, I have a dual role. The most effective nurse managers recognize the importance of a focus on clinical standards of care in addition to fiscal responsibility and staff development (Finkelman, 2020). When I am working my clinical shifts and a situation necessitates critical thinking I prefer to collaborate and weigh the pros and cons and facilitate deliberation prior to making a decision. My leadership style makes me a proponent of patient centered cared.

I also track compliance for my department. As a transformational leader it’s important to me that I don’t hold others to standards that I am unable to obtain myself. I am a working leader. Transformational leaders tend to be confident, self-motivated, loyal, and have a positive influence on others (Finkelman, 2020). It is my style to lead by example and motivate others to success.  Transformational leadership style isn’t appropriate for every situation such as in a crisis situation when a quick response is required. I will further develop my leadership skills by learning the other leadership styles and implementing them when appropriate.  A transactional leadership style is necessary when I am working my administrative hours. The functionality of the department is the main focus. Adhering to policies is necessary to meet departmental goals. As the staff members become more proficient and dedicated to the department a place for a laisse faire leadership style could be appropriate. I have a professional mentor to help me to learn and develop into the most effective and efficient leader I can be.
