The importance of giving appropriate credit to others when writing up your own work
Giving due credit to the writer’s work is necessary for helping the university to become academically honest. Any valuable information regardless of its publication should be given its due credit (American Mathematical Society, 2019). For the maintenance of academic honesty, The University of Adelaide provides guidelines to staff and students to avoid plagiarism. Factors like academic integrity, ethical behaviour, and credibility will be positively impacted by crediting the writer’s work.
Academic Integrity of the institution
Giving sufficient credit to other’s work will have a positive impact on the university’s academic integrity. According to McGowan (2005, cited in The University of Adelaide 2020), higher-level writing needs a lot of research, and key information extracted from other’s work should be acknowledged. The writer’s main information is acknowledged by providing in-text referencing in the paragraph. The university expects work from the students that are produced on their own and providing the credit to the author’s information (The University of Adelaide 2020). The academic integrity of the institution can be maintained by using the proper referencing and maintaining a good ethical behaviour towards the writer.
Referencing
Referencing the author’s main ideas is expected by the university officials in the assignments and all the information must be given the due credit regardless of the referencing system used by the student (The University of Adelaide,2020). Following a proper referencing system and the use of in-text citations is important while giving credit to the work of the author. Practices like referencing will have a positive impact on the academic integrity of the institution and improve the writing of the student.
Ethical behaviour
By following the guidelines of the university, the students and teachers will maintain ethical behaviour in their work. This is achieved by referencing the key information in their work. Taking credit for the work that is not done by us will lead to cheating. According to The University of Adelaide (2010), the presented work that does not give due credit to the writer’s work is plagiarism. This reduces the morality of the students and the teachers. Good ethical behavoiur can be developed by giving appropriate credit to the author’s work.
Credibility
Providing sufficient credit to the author’s ideas will have a positive impact on credibility. The university teachers expect the students to begin work on referencing the information for avoiding plagiarism (The University of Adelaide, 2014). The staff members, like teachers, will be expected to provide resources to preserve the best academic practices (The University of Adelaide 2020).
By following all the procedures, the students will improve their writing. The teacher can rely on the student for not plagiarizing the information and for using in-text citations. . ‘The reader will have confidence in the writing because of the type of the source being used’ (Williams and Carroll, 2009, p.60).
Providing due credit to people’s original work will have a positive influence on the academic integrity of the institution and credibility. The academic integrity can be achieved by maintaining ethical practices like referencing that will due credit to the author. The credibility of the student can be known by going through the student’s work and the procedures followed by the student should be recognised to maintain the ethical practices of the institution.
