discussion questions
1. We discuss WHY we do research before reviewing internal validity and external validity. The purpose of research is to determine whether an outcome variable is related to an explanatory variable, or whether a particular dependent variable is related to an independent variable (or group of independent variables). In other words, we’re interested in whether “this” causes “that,” where “this” is some independent variable, or treatment, or explanatory variable (something that “drives” or “causes” the dependent variable), and “that” is some dependent variable, or some outcome variable, that we’re interested in explaining or predicting. Long story short, our goal in research is to better understand, explain, and predict how the world works, and, with that knowledge, to hopefully make the world a better place. Having said all of that, please share with your peers a video, article, or website that references research that you find fascinating. As we progress throughout the week in our discussion, we’ll refine our understanding of internal and external validity and sampling, but first things first, what is the important research topic that strikes your interest? Answer in 200-300 words.
Q2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each sampling technique mentioned in this week's chapter, and cite some examples of when a researcher would choose one technique over another.
