RJ: 7 ENG 102 Finding Web Sources  Directions: Answer the following questions in your Research Journal. 1. Open up Google and let’s try typing in one of our search terms we’ve used in RJ2 and RJ5. What do you notice about your immediate hits? Document the search term you used and note what you can tell just from your first five hits without even clicking on one. Share your observations with your peers and record what you noticed below.

2.  Try adding the letters “gov” (as in .gov). Notice how your results change. Define and describe the strengths and weakness of each URL ending listed below.

Define it

Types of material it will provide (the strengths)

Potential for bias or other issues (the weaknesses)

.gov

.org

.com

.edu

3. Answer each of the following questions about websites:

1. How does a Pay/Donate button influence the credibility of a website?

2. How do colorful images or provocative slogans or words influence the credibility of a website?

3. How do advertisements (including pop-up ads) influence the credibility of a website?

4. How do dead or expired hyperlinks influence the quality of a website?

4. Review the sources you’ve already collected to determine what types of information you still need. As you search, make a list of sites or web-accessed sources that might help fill the holes in your research.

What you need/want

Website/URL

5. You should find one website or web-accessed source to add to the Community Annotated Bibliography. Find one website or web-accessed source to read and summarize. In around 300 words, articulate a “big picture” assertion—telling what the source is about/accomplishes, overall. Also explain major “key points” from the source, along with examples/details from the source that help the summary to be more thorough or clear.

You’ll also need a 200 word evaluative summary using TRAAP as a guide to evaluating the source.

Include the bibliographic entry, 300 word summary, and 200 word evaluation with this Research Journal Entry, and add it to your class’s Community Bibliography Pool.

6.  You will need to work as a team to find additional web sources to complete your project.
