Risk: Clear Thinking Assignment 2

Risk is a part of everyday life. I am currently a college student in Chicago. We cross the street, eat food in restaurants, or stay out in the sun on nice days. Some of us don’t wear seatbelts or do smoke cigarettes, or engage in other risky behaviors.

When we hear news about risks like the possibility of developing brain cancer from cellular phones or getting Alzheimer’s disease from using aluminum (neither of which has scientific support), we sometimes overreact. While it might be nice to eliminate all risk from the environment and the products we use, a zero-risk standard is simply unattainable.

How do you think risk should be discussed and dealt with in public policy issues like the environment and consumer products? How could you help people understand the risks they take everyday are often much higher than risks from things that are emphasized in the media?
