Risk Management Method The first step is preparation, which is a primary concept with establishing security policies. Because homeowners may not be security experts, it is critical to receive security education and awareness training from local companies. Your local emergency management and law enforcement agencies should have plenty of resources on local neighborhood watch programs, fire safety, carbon monoxide, robbery, theft, etc. There is a plethora of security issues that are common within local communities, but households themselves often do not have security plans.

Know your Neighbor The next requirement is being aware of your surroundings and knowing your neighborhood. People who move into neighborhoods without knowing the demographics and criminal history are highly vulnerable to moving to a location that may have security concerns. It is very beneficial to conduct research on general vicinities of the local fire department, police department, hospital, and emergency response agencies. It would also be beneficial to research crime and violence statistical data within the area to determine any safety concerns. Referring to risk management within organizations, it is understood that there are assets to protect. To have an effective security risk management program, the organization has to identify all critical infrastructures and assets/resources that need to be protected from vulnerabilities and threats. Most organizations use the configuration management database to track all assets. There needs to be a different approach for communities and households. Homeowners should identify all assets within the dwelling (i.e. other occupiers, money, valuables, important documents, etc.) and develop a plan on how to protect such assets such as purchasing a security system or developing a plan for contacting the police department.

Networking Then, there is the role of networking. Organizations network with other companies and invite external stakeholders to bring an outward perspective on mitigating security risks. Similarly, communities should network with companies (i.e. local governments) in their area on how they can protect their neighborhoods. It is especially important to bring a different and innovative outlook to protect tangibles as well as the people. For example, the Anaheim Police Department developed a partnership with Nextdoor, which is a private social network for neighborhoods to be stronger, safer communities with the help of residents (Law Enforcement Today, 2017).

Overall, security risk management practices should serve as the backbone of a community like security management policies are for organizations. Assessments and risk analysis should be completed to determine if there are any risks and then implement a program unique to the community's needs. There are community risk assessments, such as the Community Risk Assessment Vision 20/20, because there is an emphasis on emergency management. Fire management, law enforcement, emergency incidents, and other emergency matters should be encompassed in a community plan to provide a more "focused approach to reducing specific risks and provide a comprehensive program involving community partners, law enforcement, emergency management professionals, and other staff in an organizational culture that recognizes the importance of reducing risks within community" (Stouffer, 2016 p. 1). The primary focus of risk management within communities is to identify, analyze, assess, and prioritize risks within the realm of responsibility to reduce vulnerability and mitigate the threat.
