Final Project Food and Cultural Writing Rubric

As listed on syllabus:

Final Recipe Project: You are required to share a narrative about a family recipe that is important to you. The intention is that you share a piece of your family history with me and or the class as a whole. I have a rubric that we will discuss mid semester, so you have a greater understanding. This project should be a lot of fun. This outcome is worth a total of 100 points and will be submitted through Blackboard. There will be multiple ways in which this project is to be submitted and so we will schedule an office hour time as a team to discuss.

Rubric Information:

Each of us have a story to tell. Are stories are important and they help stay grounded in times of struggle and challenges as well as growth and joyful times. Some of our stories are filled with food practices that come handed down from generation. Some of us have connected to food through the communities we live in or the behaviors we have engaged in. This final project is a chance to share that lived experience in a way that helps add your voice to the narrative. Some of us are at expressing ourselves through the written voice. Some of us are better at showing our stories through actions or behaviors. This project allows you to use your voice in the way you feel is best to bring to life your lived experiences or even preferred lived experiences. Please see below.

This project requires you do one of the following:

Option #1

1. Write a 2-3 three-page paper that include a page to page and a half narrative about your personal family food practices around a special event. This narrative must be summative in nature and must be written with proper sentence structure in 12-inch Time Roman font. Your paper must have a cover page and must include the who, what, where, when, and why this is culturally relevant to you.

2. You must include at least one recipe and tie the recipe back to the learning in one of the chapters in the text. For example, if the recipe is a potato salad recipe ( you would list that this is a bound salad) and what makes it a bound salad. The recipe must include both the ingredients and directions to make it. In addition, you must either take a photo and include the photo in your paper response or you may source a similar photo online and include in the writing. You may choose to make changes to the recipe for instance and recreate it from a healthy twist. This change may be a way for you to add the textbook information in a creative way.

3. If your family does not have a culturally significant recipe, then you are to create a culturally significant experience using food that you might create for your own family going forward.

4. You will share this narrative experience to the class as a whole in the last two sessions of our class.

Option # 2

1. You may create a video of your making a culturally significant food item online in your own kitchen. The recipe you make would be connected to your families lived experience or the lived experience you would like to create.

2. The video would be 5-10 minutes and would show you preparing all ingredients and then making the food item from start to finish.

3. You would then imbed the video link in a PowerPoint presentation that has a cover page, slide that lists all the ingredients, and the recipe listed out step by step.

4. You will share this video with the class as a whole

Both options, need to be submitted by Dec 1st in Blackboard to the prompt.

Both options, must be neat, organized, and be documented with at least one learning from each text.

Both options, must include a culturally relevant story that helps the reader to understand the lived experiences or new experience that could/might happen.

Both options, must be on time, be engaging and be visually appealing.
