Rhetorical Decisions

Purpose: The Purpose of this essay is to shed light on how self love and understanding can break the generational pattern of how you perceive love.

Audience: My target audience can be a parent who notices the patterns in the way they parent vs how their parents parented them. It can also capture young adults who have made a conscious decision to exert love in a healthier way then their own parents have.

Occasion: The occasion is that understanding why your parents exert love the way they do can lead you to a path of forgiveness and healthier versions of love.

Pre-Writing

Event: How living with my 93-year-old grandmother for three months gave me a better understanding of the love that my own mother exerts and how that season of my life started my own self-love journey

Thesis: There is an old saying, “Hurt people, hurt people” but on June 13th, 2017 that saying became an unsettling reality in my life. Caring for my grandmother, the woman who raised my mom, shed light on my mothers parenting and help me take my first steps towards self-love.

Brainstorm: I will explain my experience living with my grandmother and how the love she exerts is very similar to how my mother chose to love me. I will connect that experience with how myself love journey started after I was able to better understand why my mother loved with such aggression.

Outline:

Paragraph 1: Summarizing my self love journey and the main events that stared it.

Paragraph 2: Describing the summer I took care of my grandmother and the events that mirrored my mother’s love.

Paragraph 3: Talking about the relationship that I have with my own mother and how I was able to accept the way that she loves without continuing the same pattern with my own child.

Paragraph 4: Explaining how myself love journey stemmed from the understanding I had with my mother’s relationship with her own mom.

Paragraph 5: Ending with how self-love is the best love.
