English 2311 – Rhetorical Analysis Grading Rubric

1) Introduction (15 points) ________

Is there some sort of introduction section or paragraph that tells the reader what this artifact is and how/where it is used? Does this do a good job of setting the reader up for the rest of the assignment?

2) Document Analysis (50 points) _________

Does this memo analyze the document according to Markel’s Measures of Excellence? Is the analysis thorough and well thought out? Does the author do a good job of showing the reader examples of how the memo does or does not meet these measures? Or has the author simply summarized the document?

3) Organization (20 points) _________

Is this memo organized in a way that makes sense to you as a reader? Do the headings accurately describe the information in the section below them? Would there be any better way to organize this information? Are any sections too large or too small?

4) Memo Format (20 points) _________

Is the paper in a memo format, including the heading information? Is the spacing appropriate with Before/After spacing fixed?

5) Grammar and Flow (20 points) _________

Does the author follow the conventions of business writing, avoiding slang and informal language? Is the memo grammatically clean and reads well? Does the author avoid being too wordy? Is the information presented clearly?

Total (125 points) _________

An additional 25 points for this project will come from an additional Reflection Memo you will write.
