There is various benefit associate with quit smoking especially on improving on the overall health. For example, it contributes to lengthening life expectancy. Moreover, it decreases diseases such as lung cancer, heart diseases, and kidney diseases; This has resulted in the invention of many ways to quitting smoking. For example, individualized treatment is offered by a specialized for an individual dependent on nicotine. Therefore, the specialist develops a treatment plan specifically designed for the addicted individual. However, there are various other approaches to solving the problem of smoking in society. Among these is the application of rhetorical appeals such as ethos, logos, and pathos. It is used to engage the audience, smokers, and non-smokers, in various compelling ways. The commercial “Quit Smoking Commercial" crafts the argument of quitting smoking through pathos and logos (Quit Smoking Commercial). The commercial creates a reaction from the audience, hence effectively persuades them to agree with the argument passed across.
Rhetorical appeals
First off, the commercial employs pathos in its argument; The commercial portrays the relationship between a mother and child (Gagich and Zickel). They both walk in a subway station holding hands. However, his mother leaves him, which profoundly disturbs the child, who immediately starts to cry. The audience can relate to this situation since everyone can remember their childhood. The commercial also explores the connection and security that a child experiences with a parent and immediately breaks it. We can see the confusion in the child, showing the impact it has on him. The child struggles to find his mother in the big crowd. Consequently, this is used to show the child's plight.
Drawing in the audience to sympathize with the child is practical as it develops the impact smoking has on loved ones. The commercial finds the balance in convincing the audience through emotions without appearing to manipulate them. The example of a child is a perfect example since everyone can relate (Stewart). The fear of losing someone is explicitly used in the commercial and finds a more appropriate illustration in the fear that a child has of losing his mother. The audience gets the message that they will cause suffering for their loved ones if they lose their lives; This tackles the topic of a smoking head on through the demonstration of a child’s emotions.
The commercial also employs logos, which refers to using reason to influence a large crowd; we can adequately apply this in a cause-and-effect situation. In the commercial, the mother abandons the child in a subway station. The child is immediately overwhelmed and starts to cry; Which explores the impact smoking has on individuals. It examines people's death as a result of smoking and the impact it has on loved ones. The commercial can pass the message that smoking kills. For example, the studies that have been conducted show that more than sixteen million Americans live with a disease due to smoking. Therefore, for every individual that dies due to smoking, approximately thirty people live with a severe illness related to smoking.
These facts and figures suggest the need to have the smoking habit stopped. Moreover, the excess use of tobacco increases the risk of cancer, such as lung cancer. Heart diseases occur as a result of cigarette smoking. There is a deep connection between smoking for pregnant mothers and pregnancy complications. Some studies show that the population of smokers' percentage has decreased globally; however, due to an increase in the population growth, the number of cigarette smokers is steadily increasing. Smoking prevalence for women since 1980 has been shown to have by forty-two percent while the men are twenty-five percent. Therefore, the number of male smokers is increasing globally; This shows the need to take some actions to prevent this. The reason to deal with this problem is that smoking habit leads to significant health risks and could significantly impact the healthcare systems; therefore, the commercial takes an in-depth exploration of the impact that smoking has on an individual.
Lastly, the commercial uses ethos to appeal to the audience. The is evident through the relationship between a mother and child; This is used to tap into the ideas and values that a society holds. Society has a vital consideration for taking care of one's child. It is deemed responsible for taking care of a child. Therefore, the commercial depicts this through the mother abandoning the child; This is deemed irresponsible, and the audience can feel the impact. Therefore, they get the message that excessive smoking leads to death and, as a result, makes an individual abandon their responsibilities.
Conclusion
In summary, smoking is dangerous to an individual's health and has a tremendous impact on the family and friends around us. Therefore, the commercial instead focuses on the harm smoking habit has on the relationship formed with our loved ones. The main idea is that smoking kills, and the research shows that many people are hooked to this habit. Nonetheless, the commercial tries to put across the message to quit smoking more creatively and convincingly. Therefore, the main lesson is that smoking kills and that people should strive to stop.
