Central and Eastern Europe are said to be having a flunked democracy, a flunked democracy is a failed democracy, a democracy that is dysfunctional. After the First World War, the European countries which previously had established democracies started having constraints with them. Various reasons led to the destabilization of democracies that were previously functioning very well (Rothschild, 2017).
The failures of democracies had various reasons. First and foremost, there was an economic calamity in Germany around the year 1920, early 1929, the great depression actually destabilized the European economy and as a result affected the democracy. The great depression is the most fateful stock-market crash in the history and it took place in New York. It marked the start of economic crisis (Rothschild, 2017).
Secondly, the central and eastern Europe experienced racial instability immediately after the First World War because the ethnic groups were fighting. There were fights amongst different groups across numerous streets endangering the security of others. The constraints on the peace and harmony of the state led to the destabilization of their democracies.
Between world war one and two, the most known statesman was absent. This eventually led to the weakening of the democracy. To add, there were the defects that were present in their constitutions and they facilitated the out coming of the authoritarian rule and eventually the flunked democracy.
The restructuring of Europe after the Great world war had a great impact on the democracy of the Central and the Eastern Europe. The organizing of the new regions under governance by the new administration led to the turmoil. For instance, the lands of Eastern Europe was previously dominated by the following governments; Germany, Russia and ANGLO-Hungarian. However, new occupants turned up after the wars and hence the disagreements plus chaos (Rothschild, 2017).
The public had no experience with democracy and therefore it was ignoring the essential philosophies and structures that were giving support to a democratic government, this really affected the previously established democracy and resulted to its failure. The citizens became accustomed to orders and could not even contribute to anything politically, they could easily be misled or manipulate by the government (Rothschild, 2017).
The political leaders of Eastern and Central Europe had also been given orders from the administration that were dominating them, they really wanted to work well for the well-being of the citizens but at the same time they were scared of making moves that could land them in trouble, messing with or letting down the government to be precise. This dilemma and lack of a sure decision on what to do resulted into chaos and failure of several Eastern governments to act. Their inaction facilitated the abuse of power, serious dictatorship, and various forms of oppression from others. This was definitely a failure of democracy (Rothschild, 2017).
