Definition of freedom
Chapter 8 of the book talks unfolds the theme of freedom.
Foua narrates to the author things that she misses about Laos, their origin.
These include;
Free spirit; the ability to do anything you want
Freedom to own your fields
Freedom to own your own plants, rice and trees.
This amounts to freedom that they would enjoy back in their land (Fadiman, 2012).
This is atypical of the American society , because America is know to foster freedom.
The issue of freedom in a foreign land may be difficult to achieve specially when you are refugees. They still have to navigate the American health system with a child diagnosed with epilepsy. They would have a different life if they were in Laos. The freedom they would enjoy for being able to speak in a language they understand would help them face an easy time as they seek medication. Nao Kao and Foua were unable to speak English (Fadiman, 2012). The normal freedom and life that one enjoys in their own country is not the same in a foreign country. Lack of freedom to use a translator freely and to talk about their issues make it hard access medication.

Lack of freedom of choice due complexity of Hmong culture
The author and a psychologist arrive at the Lee’s but it hard for them to get audience.
Their culture is known to be difficult and everyone at MCMC knew that it would be very hard to successfully pursue the story.
Their long held traditions where problems were believed to be spiritual prevent access to medical services (Sandage et al., 2003).
This denied even a sick child access to medical services.
The freedom and right to access medical care may not be possible without liberation from the chains of certain practices (Freire, 1972).
Freedom to make choices is important but that is not easy in the case of a family tied in complex cultural practices (Sandage et al., 2003) .The elders prevent penetration of their community by choosing to reject everything asked. The public knew that there was no freedom of joing the Hmong community. The health system in California is designed to fit the scenario of everyone but the Hmong have traditions that make it hard for them to freely access services as well as other people like psychologist freely access patients. This is a case of lack of freedom brought about by complex cultural practices.
