Outline Comment by Tim Linnemann: Hi Jiahao! As per your request, I’m providing written feedback here for your outline. However, if you’d also like to talk with me, I would love the opportunity! I admit, I kinda like doing the videos since I get to communicate a bit more of my attitude than I can with only the written word. A lot of my comments (almost all) are critical, so I don’t want to give the impression that I’m grumpy or something! I think there’s a lot of good work here that you can build on for the final draft.OK, getting into it a bit more substantively here: I’ve got some more specific feedback for you below, but I want to first frame those comments with some more “big picture” comments. The number 1 issue with the paper at the moment is that you never ever consider how the opponent can challenge the arguments you’re offering in support of your thesis. You have a short segment here at the beginning (before the intro?) where you mention some seeds of considerations/arguments they might be able to offer, but they never get developed or presented fully. Both ways of bringing in the opponent to the conversation are important: 1) to let them respond critically to your arguments and 2) to let them introduce their own concerns for how we ought to resolve this question. So, presenting the opponent is a major missing piece or “blind spot” for the paper as it stands now. And following up on that, once you get them in, I’ll also be looking to have you respond to their arguments and objections as best you can. So, first let them do some “counter punching” but then you can and should defend yourself to the best of your ability. This is something I’d be VERY happy to talk with you more about and provide more support/assistance.Look me up any time in the next couple of weeks!

Topic: What is the best way of life?

Party 1: Plan ahead? Party 2: Live in the Moment?

Party 2: Live in the present:

Plan can't keep up with changes.

Too waste of time, too waste of brainpower。

The advantage is that there are no worries, and there is no need to save money to buy a house or car to reduce your quality of life

Party 1:Plan ahead:

Assessing risks and Opportunities

Source of motivation to continue working

Reduce the incidence of unexpected problems and stress.

Introduction

Introduction Statement

Failing to plan is planning to fail. That is a statement that we have all interacted with at one point in our lives. From the statement, the importance of planning ahead is emphasized. No one knows how their tomorrow will turn out but having a plan about tomorrow is a good way to help tackle the day despite the challenges and benefits it brings forth.

Thesis Statement

Plan ahead to bring the future into the present so that one person can do something at the current time.

Body:

Main Point One - Assessing risks and Opportunities

Topic Sentence - Through planning, people can assess future risks and opportunities to avoid unnecessary things from happening.

Supporting Sentence - Taking risks is an important part of success. However, the risks to be assumed should be determined in advance to avoid possible adversity. Pre-assessing risks through planning enables people to determine the best mitigation strategies and implement these strategies to avoid current future risks. In addition, since there is enough time to plan and eliminate risks, risks can be turned into opportunities. This brings up an important aspect of the plan. Comment by Tim Linnemann: How does it do this? It seems to me that the missing assumption here is that the better strategies are found with the more consideration, critical reasoning, and imaginative effort one can apply to them. This opens up the possible debate over whether this is to be expected. Some people who opt for the “live in the moment” side are skeptical of this claim. They might argue that this approach gets disconnected from the relevant variables for discernment that are most accessible in the moment. They may also argue that preemptive planning allows one more opportunities to get distracted by minor matters and give them more attention then they deserve.I’d encourage avoiding a casting of the opponent as thoughtless – that would probably be a straw man here. The stronger opponent is this one I’m sketching above who is all about accurate responsible discernment but disagrees about how best to approach this ambition. This would help with addressing/challenging the “failing to plan is planning to fail” sentiment.

Main Point Two - Source of motivation to continue working

Topic Sentence - Through planning ahead, people becomes targeted and motivated to continue working as they have their eye on the price. Comment by Tim Linnemann: Again, flesh out HOW exactly this happens. My best guess here for what you’d have in mind is that by investing attention into a matter (via planning) one becomes more personally invested too. In other words, there is a general principle that we become more attached and motivated to care about those things that we spend a lot of time and energy working with. So, because planning in a way of investing time/energy/attention, it becomes a conduit for increased respect for the value of what is being considered.Another argument might be that it is generally easier to be motivated to do something if that thing isn’t arbitrary – if you know WHY it is good to do that thing. Planning puts one’s attention on their ultimate goals and ambitions and so puts one in contact with such “whys”.

Supporting Sentence - Through prior planning, people becomes proactive. By being proactive, people can take the right actions when facing difficulties and challenges, because they have a plan to guide. Therefore, people react to situations rather than to them. In addition, planning helps to improve personal performance. A good plan can lead to better preparation, thereby improving people's performance. Because people have a plan to guide them, they will be more comfortable at work and thus become more productive. In addition, a plan may have a future price. Such prices motivate people to work harder so that they can achieve future prices. This is also a way to plan to improve performance and motivation. Comment by Tim Linnemann: Maybe this language helps with getting your point across a bit more clearly here: “Therefore, people are able to respond intentionally to situations rather than merely react to them” I like the conceptual distinction I think you’re going for here, but it also is worth thinking about what makes these two situations principled different. What is reacting vs responding? What’s the problem with mere reacting? Finally, this might be a good distinction to introduce for the previous argument too as some of the reasons against reacting connect with getting better outcomes. And your opponent can perhaps challenge this and argue in favor of “in the moment” discernment, as I mentioned previously.

Main Point Three - Reduce the incidence of unexpected problems and stress.

Topic Sentence - Through planning ahead, you can foresee the problem, thereby reducing stress and alleviating any unexpected problems that may arise in the future. Comment by Tim Linnemann: This part seems very closely connected with the argument of Main Point One, but I think you’re on to something here with there being an independent argument. The key appeal here seems to be about peace vs suffering/stress. Your argument here is that anticipating problems reduces the stress of constantly reacting and “bouncing around” – that it provides a stability where you’re not as much at the mercy of the current moment. That’s an interesting appeal. But again, your opponent can attempt to challenge this in some not-so-insignificant ways IMO. One big thing I imagine them arguing is that by thinking about all the possible future problems you allow them to weigh on you more than if you didn’t spend so much time worrying about them. The “in the moment” opponent is advocating for detachment so that one can address themselves to the issues of the current moment more fully.

Supporting Sentence - When people plan ahead, they will have more control over their activities. This is because the plan stipulates a clear direction that should always be followed. The plan makes people feel safe, thereby reducing the pressure they may face during the execution of the activity. In addition, planning enables people to plan for the risks and problems they may face in the future. Since people know any risks that may arise in the future, they have formulated effective mitigation strategies for these problems. This reduces the remaining problems that people may face.

Conclusion

In short, plan ahead to bring the future into the present so that a person can do something at the current time. This is because one can identify all future risks and opportunities, and propose effective methods to mitigate risks and seize opportunities. This allows a well-prepared person to deal with situations that may arise in the future. Planning also strengthens people's motivation to deal with all the challenges and situations that may arise in the future. Through the plan, you can clarify the plan to follow. Therefore, their motivation is because of what to do. In addition, motivation can be increased as a goal to perform a specific task with a future price. Finally, planning ahead can reduce any unexpected legacy issues that may arise. This is because all potential problems have been identified and effective mitigation strategies have been developed.
