A Comparison between Magazine and TedTalk Genres
Rhetorical situations refers to the circumstance where one tries to convince or persuade others on a particular matter. Rhetoric can either be through the words of mouth or writing. This paper compares and contrasts Ted talk and Magazine genres of rhetorical. Written and spoken rhetoric are quite comparable in terms of style, mode, media, design, sources and evidence, rhetorical appeals, and the rhetorical methods. Despite the TedTalk and magazine being similar in passing information to the audience, they differ in their ways of persuading or informing the audience.
Nicholas Mancusi, the writer of the article “Coming of age in the Afghan wilderness”, tries to comprehend the commentary of Jamil Jan Kochai in the book 99 Nights in Logar that narrates the story of Marwand and his world. The audience of the writing is the cultural people who have an interest in the literature thus can read the book. Nicholas aims at understanding what Jan Lochai primarily meant by writing the book. The writer uses the article to remind people on the need to treat stories with respect. The article falls under the magazine genre.
For the Ted Talk genre, “Why do we cry? The three types of tears,” the speaker Alex Gendler aims at imparting the technical knowledge on the learners. The target of the talk are the people who have an interest in science; thus their interest in learning the different body functioning. The purpose of the discussion is to inform the audience on the different types of tears: basal, reflex, and emotional and the reason behind each one of them.
As a similarity, both genres use the third person to communicate. The writer of the magazine and the speaker in the Ted Talk narrate stories on other characters and with knowledge from other authors. In the article, Mancusi tells the life of Marwand who is a character in the novel while Alex describes the functioning of the iris as a part of the body. They use third person characters.
Another similarity is in the rhetorical modes where authors and the speaker utilizes similar styles to pass their information to the intended audience. The methods of communication involve the description of the characters. In the first case, the author describes the life of Marwand, who lived in America for six years before returning to the native country in Afghanistan. In the same case, the, the speaker describes all the processes and occasions that lead to the release of tears by eye.
Another similarity is the utilization of rhetorical mode in both genres is the classification and categorization. In the article, different stories in the book are categorized under various titles including “The Tale of the Butcher’s Son,” “The Tale of the Bibi and the Flood” and “The Tale of the Old Dog.”. For the talk, the types of tears have been categorized into three classes depending on their reasons for their release. Basal tears clean up the iris, reflex washes away the harmful substance, while the emotional tear that stabilizes the moods.
Also, there is the use of cause and effects in both cases. In Kochai’s book 99 Nights in Logar, the dog bit off Marwand’s index finger because he had stayed away from home for too long for the animal to recognize him when he came back. Gendler also uses cause and effect when he explains the three types of tears are a result of the impact that interferes with the normal operations of the iris because factors like onions tend to irritate the eyes.
Despite the similarities, Ted and magazine have differences as well. For instance, the two genres differ in the modes used. The Ted Talk is a multimedia text, which entails incorporation of speaking to deliver the message electronically. Although electronically presented, the message comes through the direct words of the speaker. On the other hand, the article is presented in forms of written and visual text that the audience is expected to read the documents as opposed to listening as it is in the case of the talk.
While the article is a text in print, the talk is a media communication involving the use of sound. The author presents the narrative in written form where the reader ought to read while the speaker presents the talk through oral dictions via the media.
Regarding the design, TedTalk utilizes the video animation design. There is the simulation of the characters to provide the audience with a vivid picture of the occurrence and activities as they took place. Both the iris and onion are presented as a human with the ability to talk and interact. For the article, it is presented in a block heading comprising of four paragraphs. It is short and precise to enhance quite understanding for the audience. It is s cover book for the novel 99 Nights in Logar.
The two also differ on sources and evidence. The speakers in Ted talk and the magazine article have varied sources and evidence for their information. In the first instance, the talk utilizes text as the source. Gendler, who presents the talk, uses the knowledge in the science book to show his point of view and interpretation of the act of crying. Additionally, the author uses the commentary of the book writer to determine the meaning and the basis of the information. The article uses the knowledge obtained from the animation and analysis of the original novel.
The last feature that differentiates the two genres is the rhetorical appeals, which enhances the ability of the author or speaker to convince the audience. Alex Gendler uses ethos to appeal to his audience. In this case, ethos refers to the credibility of the speaker as a scientist. Being a scientist, he has a wide range of knowledge on the scientific functioning of the different parts of the body. Also, he has acquired knowledge through the study of science.
On the other hand, Nicholas utilizes pathos. He employs emotions to help manipulate and influence the emotional reaction in feelings of the audience through telling of the story. The story on the guard dog that bit Marwand's finger was meant to instill the sense of pain in the audience. They can understand and associate with the pain experienced by the character during the experience.
Although the Ted Talk and magazine genres both aim at communicating and passing information to the audience, they both have similarities and differences. Although TedTalk and magazine are similar in several ways, they are different in the way they persuade and inform their audience. In both cases, the narrators tell the story of another character thus telling it from a third person perspective. The differences include the mode of presentation of both text; for the talk, it is multimedia that allow the use of voice thus listening to the subject while for the article it is the use of texts books for reading.
