Reviewing Performance

Manager Bear Bites plc

You are a manager at Bear Bites plc and you are responsible for managing the placement students. Your current student, Student A is from UWE and has been on [his/her] placement for 3 months. Next week you are meeting with [him/her] them to discuss their performance.

You are concerned that Student A regularly gets into work late. You understand that [he/she] comes by public transport but it is their responsibility to get to work on time. You believe that Student A should have worked out the feasibility of public transport before they accepted the placement. Often Student A does not get into the office until 9.15 but sometimes it has been later for example 10.30 am. You are also concerned that Student A doesn’t always phone to explain that [he/she] will be late and when [he/she] does arrive they don’t apologise and just walk in and sit at their desk. You are therefore concerned about Student A’s attitude and the fact that [he/she] doesn’t seem to care that they are late. Although Student A is a placement student, [he/she] is still considered part of the workforce and does need to attend work on time. You therefore need to address this with [him/her].

Student A is entitled to 1 hour break for lunch. Most employees take this between 1 and 2. You have noticed that Student A takes it at very odd times, 11 – 12 or even 2 – 3. There are no strict rules about when employees take their lunch but Student A going at these times is disturbing other members of staff.

You have received complaints from other members of staff that Student A likes listen to music in the office. Apparently [he/she] always has headphones on but this is still not acceptable behaviour in an office so you need to deal with it.

You are also concerned about Student A’s dress and appearance. You accept that [he/she] is a student with a limited budget but you still expect them to come into the office every day in office clothes. Your company policy is that women must wear smart skirts or trousers and blouses and men smart trousers, shirt and tie. Often Student A wears scruffy trousers and last week [he/she] came into the office in a t-shirt. In addition, a few weeks ago you saw Student A wearing trainers rather than shoes. [He/She] also doesn’t seem to know what a hairbrush is and likes the fresh out of bed look. Often clients come into the office and therefore the appearance of your staff is very important to you. Again you appreciate that Student A is on a placement but you still expect them to comply and therefore you need to talk to [him/her] about it.

Student A also has a very poor telephone manner. [He/she] is not rude but is very short and curt with clients on the telephone. This therefore needs to be resolved.

Your other concern is that Student A is not responding well to the tasks that they have been given. [He/She] doesn’t appear to be very interested in the work and is not very motivated. You accept that some of the work that they have been given is fairly mundane and junior but this is only the beginning of the placement and you are trying to identify what their capabilities are. Student A keeps returning work which has errors in it or, is incomplete. Unless [his/her] work improves you can’t give them any more complicated or advanced work.

You are aware that while Student A is on placement [he/she] needs to gather some data for [his/her] dissertation. Student A mentioned it at [his/her] interview. However, [he/she] has not contacted you to arrange collecting the data. You think that it is Student A’s responsibility to organise and arrange because it is part of their university course.
