I think choice of Joan Didion on the Céline advert has its merits and demerits. One of its greatest strength is the sensation that the advert caused by the celebrity endorsement. Consumers are more likely to remember this ad because of linking it with Joan. This will translate into more sales as consumers search for the specific Céline black dress paired with necklace, and sunglasses. The simplicity and creativity in the ad are also vital in creating marketing efficiency. However, the ad does not cut across all generations. However, the fact that Joan is famous does not mean that she is fit with the Céline brand and does not imply that consumers can feel a connection with her. Moreover, Joan could become less popular, or she could simply change her image which would result in a contradicting image of Céline brand which she endorses. The cost of using Joan in the advert may as well have been so high while the resulting sales from the endorsement may not be high enough.

I think D&G ad has its strengths and weaknesses. To begin with, the ad succeeds in emphasizing the importance of embracing the Sicilian culture. The ad is also skillful as it brings together all generations; children, aged, youth, experienced, and the inexperienced. However, other than promoting Sicilian culture and emphasizing the importance of family companionship, the ad lacks creativity which is the key to success in advertising. A creative is memorable and lasts longer. Creative ads have proven to be more effective in inspiring consumers to purchase products compared to ads that just catalog products and their attributes. Ideally, the D&G ad simply displays the Sicilian attire but fails the creativity test. Creative designs would have captured the attention of consumers or resulted in positive attribute about the attire being advertised.
