For my article, I chose to read and write about the article titled "The gap between the rich and the poor in the US has widened to a record high, and it mirrors the growth of 'dynastic wealth". The article goes on to state that in 2018, income inequality had hit a record breaking mark in history. The article also went on to explain that middle class Americans aren't living too comfortably and they are behind on home ownerships and retirement savings due to debts they have to pay off. "The 15 family dynasties in the US own a combined $618 billion, according to the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies' Billionaire Bonanza report (Links to an external site.) ." The rich have been getting richer, while the middle class Americans are staying at the same rate. "Since 1982, the combined wealth of the top three families (Links to an external site.) — the Waltons (Links to an external site.) , the Kochs, and the Marses (Links to an external site.) — increased by 5,868%, totaling $348.7 billion, the report found."
It's quite mind boggling to know that the combined wealth of just three families total up to hundreds of billions of dollars when there are families struggling to put food on the table for their families and merely make ends meet. I chose this topic and article, because everyday the income inequality gap continues to grow. People go to college so they can get good paying jobs and live a good life, but a lot of the time they still end up stuck between a rock and a hard place, because they have student loans and debt that they can't pay off. Another issue; when politicians and government officials claim that they economy is getting better, and people are making more money, they are often only looking at the wealthy. Many times, Americans are working two jobs and still are struggling. These hard working citizens often have to rely on government benefit programs to help them live and provide for their families. Why is it that the rich get to sit back and watch the money pile up while the working class works hard everyday and barely see any money ? Studies show that If no changes are made, current projections indicate that by 2034, the retirement program trust fund will only be sufficient to pay 77 percent of scheduled benefits. I believe that the rich should be required to give a certain percentage of their money (based on how much they make) to the poor or to charities, because there is evidently enough money for everyone in America to live a comfortable life. There is no reason for there to be billionaires in a country where families are working and still struggling to make ends meet.

The article I've chosen to write about is called "Hiring Slowed in August, but Wage Gains Accelerated" and it talks about how the job market has been performing as of lately, the increased rate of wages in the U.S, as well as how Trump's tariffs have been affecting American companies and the economy itself. The article states that due to the trade war going on right now the american job market has lost steam but at the same time has shown a 0.3% growth in average hourly earnings. The article then explains how these tariffs are very negatively affecting manufacturing companies, especially factories. This is because these companies have a harder time shifting their supply chains and export a larger share of their products than other businesses do. But on the other hand, a company named Musgrave Pencil Company states that the tariffs are beneficial for its company in some ways due to the tariffs being a major negative for it's china competitors.
What I make of this article is that Trump is making a very bad move by messing with the profitability of US companies and this will affect his chances of bring reelected in 2020. Being an Entrepreneur major in college I understand how big of an impact businesses have on the good standing of the economy and if this trade war gets any worse then these companies will have to cut costs in order to stay profitable and typically that cut will be aimed at their workforce. Which will lead to more people losing their jobs.

Democrats and Abortion laws
The article that I found interesting was how Democrats support abortion laws. In the article it talks about how every candidate supports Roe V. Wade in federal law, allowing Medicaid coverage for abortions by repealing the Hyde Amendment. They also want to remove any abortion restrictions. They want abortion pills to be available to sell over the counter for every woman's disposal. President Trump has shown that he is willing to weaponize abortion to turn out his base, including misleading narratives. Pro-choice voters have made abortion one of the top topics while running for office, they want the next President to actively reframe the debate. As pro-choice they want us to focus more on health care, bodily autonomy and, at times, even the idea of abortion as a positive force enabling women to control their lives and increase their economic security. Bernie Sanders said in a statement that Abortion should be safe, legal and accessible to every person who chooses it.”
I found this article pretty interesting as Democrats are fighting to bring some kind of control for women to choose what they want to do with their bodies. Even though they want fewer restrictions on abortion. I know its a sensitive topic as abortion is based on a women’s decision depending on the sensitive situation. I think they should still have some type of restrictions when it comes down to the time frame, people might see it as just a fetus, but there are also people out there that can not have a family do to medical conditions, maybe they should have a second option if they want to not keep the baby, adoption can be a good option and might can also come down with some agreement with people that don’t support abortion. That’s just my opinion, I respect anyone else's life choices. I also found interesting how candidates are using this topic to gain more voters, by saying they are willing to work some type of commandment toward Abortion laws.

The article I chose highlights the influential Democrat from Baltimore, Elijah Cummings who recently died from complicated health challenges. Cummings was born on January 18, 1951, to a family of Southern sharecroppers and Baptist preachers. Mr. Cummings was an unmovable orator who passionately advocated for the poor black districts in the city of Baltimore. At age 11, Cummings helped to establish a local swimming pool for the community while being attacked with rocks and bottles for wanting to bring unity to his community. Cummings knew he wanted to change the society he lived in so he decided to pursue law. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University, serving as student government president as well as graduating with honors. Later on, he would then graduate from the University of Maryland School of Law. Congressman Cummings began his career in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served sixteen years and became the first African American in Maryland history to be named speaker pro tem, signifying he would be filling the role of the presiding officer of the House in the absence of the Speaker of the House. Cummings was sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives in 1996, and until now has proudly represented the place he calls home.
Due to his influential and preacher-like responses to people of power as well as the President, he was appointed as Chairman of the Committee in 2019. Despite his endeavors for people of color, he has faced backlash from the president for leading multiple investigations concerning his leadership and family affairs in the White House. President Trump responded by saying that Baltimore is where “no human being would want to live.” As well as discriminating against Democratic congresswomen of color to go back to their “crime infested countries.”
Unfortunately, it is sad to say that this man had to suffer much pain while being a powerful and strong leader in this corrupted government. Now to imagine what policies and laws will now be established without his voice being heard because he was that leader who fought for people of color. To face much backlash for what you so passionately fought for his work paid off. Throughout his years in Congress, Cummings fought for equality, integrity, and fairness in which he will always be remembered for.

Gustavo Solis explains in the Los Angeles Times article, “San Diego CBP holds migrant children longer than it is supposed to, lawyer says” that the customs and border protection in San Diego are breaking their own rules. There was an agreement created called the Flores Settlement agreement. This agreement allows customs and border protection to only detain children for 72 hours. Customs enforcement can only detain them for 20 day and not any longer than that amount. Several lawyers brought this topic up because they are constantly receiving cases of children being held for three weeks and sometimes more. Not only are children being held for longer than they are supposed to, there are also several cases where the children’s health has been ignored. Ignoring any health concerns violated the Flores Settlement agreement. The agreement has basic standards they have to follow when it comes to the care of those detained and they are constantly being violated in these cases presented by the lawyers.
There had been several reports of poor conditions in the detention centers. A spokesperson for the Customs and Border Protection claimed that they treated those held in detention centers with dignity and respect. With that being said, a survey that was conducted revealed that those who needed medical attention never got it. The Flores Settlement agreement is constantly being violated, but President Trump wants to change the Flores Settlement agreement. Though officials still do whatever they want and break rules, President Trump wants to change the rules so it becomes more strict. President Trump believes that the Flores Settlement agreement allowed to many loopholes for those being held in the detention centers.
Reading this article revealed several things that I had not known about. I did not know that there was a limited amount of time people could be held in detention centers. I had always heard of people being held in detention centers for a while so I had never realized that there was a limit. What I did know was the poor conditions people were staying in at a detention center. I had constantly heard of the poor conditions and it was not just in the detention centers in San Diego. I noticed that it was a common theme and there was no sign of it ever stopping. This article made me wonder why it took lawyers speaking up to do something to speed up the processing of those being held. Not much is being done, but the lawyers speaking up is a start.
I believe if President Trump wants to change the Flores Settlement agreement, he needs to make sure the people being held are taken care of. I believe that giving people being held in detention centers the right care like medical attention and standard living conditions is only right. I also began to wonder why President Trump wanted to change the rules so bad if they were constantly broken anyways. I started to lose a bit of hope because now I just believe that regardless of any rules that are made, they are going to be broken anyway.

This was very eye-opening to read. It breaks my heart to hear about the conditions in this facility. Not only are they detaining children longer than is legally allowed, but they are also not even giving people medical attention when it was needed. It seems as if many things are being violated in this case. I also was unaware that there was a limit for how long for people could be detained. I also have heard of people being detained for long periods of time which makes me wonder if agreements were being violated.
