What problems does this approach to crime fighting pose?
The approach to fighting crime using data-driven systems has many benefits and has even brought crime to historical lows in NYC. This is down by taking in a lot of factors such as crime patterns, severity of crime, regional crimes, identifying suspects from previous incidents, ect. With all these factors the CompStat crime-mapping program has broken up 17 out of 30 gangs in Manhattan, dropped murder from 70 in 2010 to 29 in 2013, and catch criminals who would have normally went under the radar.
However, problems could arise due to this crime fighting system. Since this system analyzes regions where crimes occur the most, criminals may notice this change in police reactions in the area and start to commit crimes randomly all over the city, making the system useless and having crime occur sporadically in the city. Another issue that could be made is people being added to the data base when they don’t belong. An example of this could be quoted from the section, “a teenager arrested for jaywalking. The arresting officer said he had stopped the young man because he was wearing a red shirt that was known to be a gang color. The young man was not a gang member, but he’s probably in the database.” What makes this worse is that the passage also explains that this record is virtually always going to be on record. This makes finding work or establishing a career, near to impossible for any of these people. continuing with potential possibilities, couldn’t this database be hacked? And if it is hacked a problem that could arise could be people writing peoples names on the database with fake information, digging up sensitive information on already convicted peoples, and even taking information out of the systems making it easier for criminals to get away with crimes.
These are the potential problems that might arise from crime fighting with this approach. This does not mean these things will happen, just potential issues that could happen.
