Methods
In this group project about how the traffic builds up along the road, it is clear that the main source of the traffic is the numbers of the students who use the road when accessing the other side of the road. For that reason, cases have been reported of students who have been involved in accidents as they use their skateboards and bicycles to cross the road, which has been a major challenge that the institution has focused on addressing. The negligence and reluctance that is usually common among the students usually make it impossible to find a permanent solution to the challenge. Various methods can be applied in data collection and analysis when carrying out a project in order to find out the possible solutions to the problems that are experienced in various situations. In this case, the methods we relied upon in collecting data include internet research, Evans Library resources, questionnaires, and interviews. In our area of study, the most common areas we focused on is the institution itself whereby we sampled the students from various levels in the campus. We also sampled some staffs who have experience in the institution to try and have some background information on how the trend has been.
Finding/Results
In this project the information obtained can be said to be relevant in trying to paint a clear picture of what has been leading to the huge traffic along the university. A survey was sent online, and we also surveyed students in person. Yet, we only received 35 responses. From the statistics we collected, it is clear that a majority of the students do not factor in their safety especially when using the roads. Most of the students expect that the drivers being informed of the existence of the institution they need to be careful while using the roads, especially where there are institutions around the roads. Statistically, Walking is the mostly used means of transportation around campus, which is followed by bikes and skateboards. As a result, the vehicles along the road usually encounter heavy traffics as learners cross form one side to the other. The office of security suggests students to dismount and carry their recreational transportation equipment across the crosswalk. However, few students follow the guidelines, and the majority agrees that using a skateboard and bikes should be allowed while crossing the road. The number of people who feel safe while crossing the roads in campus are also higher compared to those who feel otherwise. Still, a significant percentage of those interviewed proved to have witnessed accidents on the road, and from the explanations, the students usually make the mistakes that lead to accidents. The security guard we interviewed also confirmed that the students usually contribute to the accidents happening especially those using the skateboards for the first time. From the statistics, we can conclude that despite the danger that these students predispose themselves to, they do not really care when using the roads.
In our analysis, the problem of traffic is something that could be addressed if the following recommendations are implemented. Firstly, the most basic measure that could be considered is the establishment of traffic lights which are critical in guiding the driver on how to operate the vehicle. A traffic light would ensure that pedestrians use the road when it is right for them, which would bring about order on road. In addition, 29 percent of the students agreed with the traffic lights. The budget of the traffic light installation ranges from $251,190 to $516,630, and electric bills and maintenance fees are around $8,000 per year. The other solution that may be done is the establishment of a footbridge that would be used by the students without necessarily crossing the road. Most of the interviewed chose the footbridge as the best solution to regulate traffic. The budget for the bridge is estimated from $150 to $250 per square foot. Another measure that can be implemented is hiring more guards whose role would include ensuring the students are following the regulations put in place. The officer we interviewed, Daniel Golembiowski, mentioned that there are only six security guards on campus; therefore, they cannot control traffic flow every time. Hiring more officers would be easier to trace learners’ behaviors and if need be necessary actions be carried out. Yet, having officers to control the traffic was the least favorite solution of the students. The average salary for a security officer is $92,123 per year.
These measures would ensure free movement of vehicles without disturbance while at the same time guaranteeing the safety of the students, which is a critical initiative that needs to be embraced. Nevertheless, in the interview with the director of the security department, Frank Iannone supported our proposals, and he said that the best solution would be the bridge. However, Iannone mentioned that the street is not school’s property. Therefore, the institution cannot install traffic lights, built a footbridge, or hire officers to control the traffic. We would need a permission from the Melbourne City Office since the street is the states property. From our analysis, the students are willing and concerned about the possible solution to the challenge they go through every other time; indeed, most of them answered that they are going to support the project. Thus, the recommendations would be embraced and provides a long-lasting solution to the challenge experienced for many years.
