Holistic rubrics are single criteria rubrics  used to assess participants' overall achievement on an activity or item based on predefined achievement levels. Their performance descriptions are written in paragraphs and usually in full sentences. These typically don't provided an in-depth response to the students work. Analytic rubrics are two-dimensional with levels of achievement as columns and assessment criteria as rows. Using this rubric allows the assessment of participants achievements based on multiple criteria using a single rubric. Holistic rubrics are best when giving one overall score. It's for quick grading of an assignment like research papers. You are determining the quality, proficiency, or their understanding of that specific content or skill when there is no single correct answer. Analytic rubrics are best when the teacher assigns points for different areas of strengths and weaknesses. This could be used for presentations because you have different components to grade. For example, because I work with 7th graders we typically use analytic rubrics. They give the students and in-depth understanding of what they make have missed or did not complete. I believe holistic rubric are for younger students such as 2nd and 3rd graders. I have never used a holistic rubric. I gave my students a Book Report last spring. We were using Google Classroom, so that made it easier for me to using an analytic rubric. They had to fill out the document given to them with the information from their book. It was something similar to the reading fair, but without the board. They were also given the opportunity to decorate their document. I would improve my use of rubrics by giving more assignments using them. I was also create more holistic rubrics and not only use analytic rubrics. The use of rubrics allow them to see their grade broken down.

The holistic and the analytic rubric can be good it just depends on what you are looking for in an assessment. Determining when each rubric is a better choice and when mainly depends on how much time you have canulated into creating an assessment, and how much time you have laid aside for grading the assessment for your students, what type assignment you have given, and what type assessment you are giving with what type of results you are requiring from your students. The holistic rubric is the most general kind because the score to balance strengths and weaknesses among students to arrive at the single overall assessment for the entire assignment. It also usually lists 3-5 levels of performance which include a wider description of the characteristics that defines each level. Whereas the analytic rubric provides students with something known as the rating score that examines each criterion offering room to provide feedback on each criterion most of the time.

The advantage of the holistic rubric is that it is easier and less trouble for the teacher to grade and takes less time to create because it just requires you to look over the assignment and give one grade for the entire assignment. Unlike the holistic rubric, the advantage of the analytic rubric illustrates a clearer perception to students why they received their scores and gives the teacher the opportunity to show students on paper what and why they have the sores they received without having to explain it to them. Although, the disadvantage of the holistic rubric is that it doesn’t provide targeted feedback to students which means they are unlikely to learn much from the assignment. The analytic rubric takes a lot of time to create, and students don’t clearly understand what is expected of them.

In the last school term, I was virtual. It was a challenge sometimes to get some of the students and parents geared up and excited to work. Turning in the homework was the most difficult for many I think because the way the previous year ended so relaxed with students at home. I used the holistic and analytic rubric, but it was not as difficult because everything was prepared online and preset which made it easier to grade but it also created a lot of paperwork that did take a lot of time to grade because of the way the grading system was set up. You had to go back and forth to grade each student. If I did virtual again, I would improve the way the grading system was set up and maybe use another software to grade or just set up the grading to not have to go all the way each child work before grading another student.

A holistic rubric is a rubric that has “one overall score based on the overall impression of a student’s quality of work”.  In our reading assignment “Rubrics for Assessment” it suggests that holistic rubrics are easier to score because only one score is given for each level. Generally, the levels of the rubric are labeled with numbers, letters or words.   When the characteristics of each level is group together which makes evaluating an assignment easier and faster to grade.   (Arter & McTighe, 2001, p 21)

With analytic rubrics “each criterion is given a separate score while using different descriptive ratings.” These rubrics are time consuming when grading an assignment or task.  However, they provide detailed, specific feedback to students. (Arter & McTighe,2001, p 22)

When I taught Science, holistic rubrics were easier to use with group assignments/projects. I was able to grade the assignments and projects give student feedback sooner. When the students completed individual Science Fair Projects, I used an analytic rubric because each criteria was scored differently.

While teaching ELA I used holistic rubrics to score the students’ writing.  The State also uses this rubric for scoring the writing of the MAAP Test. In Reading and Social Studies, I have used both holistic and analytic rubrics.  When students were given topics to research individually or on Reading Fair Projects, I used analytic rubrics. With group assignments it was always easier to use holistic rubrics. This allowed my groups to work together to receive the best score and me to give them immediate feedback.

After this week’s lecture and reading assignments I have a better understanding of how to use and create rubrics for assessments. Even though I’m not a classroom teacher anymore, I plan to share  these  acquired skills and resources with the teachers in at my school.
