Discuss one business in your area that has demonstrated accountability to people, to its community, and to its environment

One business in my community that has demonstrated accountability to people, community, and the environment is a local craft brewery named Fishweir Brewing Company. Fishweir Brewing Company opened a couple of years ago in Jacksonville, Fl. They hired locally and all of their equipment and furniture were bought locally. In fact, the bar top is made from an oak tree that fell in Fishweir park during Hurricane Michael. They are environmentally conscience during production and try not to let anything go to waste. It is important for companies to be environmentally friendly in my opinion. “Regarding the most basic level, most companies do not want to be viewed as polluters” (Hammond, & Christensen, 2016). They have donated to local charities, held blood drives, yoga and beer classes called posture and pints, and plant exchanges. The employees seem happy working there too. The building they own was a former night club that was shut down over 10 years ago and left abandoned. The night club was notorious for criminal activity. It was a black eye in the community and the local residents did everything they could to get them out. After years of investors backing out of purchasing along came Fishweir Brewing Company. They brought life back into that neighborhood and the community enjoys it. They also make a delicious IPA.

An example of a local business that will demonstrate accountability to the people and the community would be 16Tech Innovation. According to the 16 Tech Innovation website, “is a nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Directors dedicated to fostering economic growth and innovation in Central Indiana.” (https://www.16tech.com/16-tech-community (Links to an external site.)). 16 Tech Innovation has just announced that they will be purchasing the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute, Indiana University School of Medicine researchers, and the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership. The purchase of these buildings was over 500 million dollars once the project is completed. This purchase will allow the company to build offices, retail stores, and apartment complexes for about 250 families. Once the project is finished it will create 3,000 new jobs in efforts to boost our local economy. Most of the jobs will be in the health care and IT industry. These new jobs will help ELI Lilly’s COVID-19 research and drug testing. The local westside community is very excited to have this massive project to help expand their community since this area has seen so many businesses close up over the years. It will give this community a more profitable income as well as attracting young professionals to this area that used to be an eyesore.

One business in my local area that has demonstrated accountability to the people, community, and the environment is a local brewery called Lazy Magnolia Brewery.  At this point I'm sure everyone is well aware of COVID-19. At the peak of the pandemic this company went from brewing beer to manufacturing Eco-friendly hand sanitizer to sell instead of alcohol.  During the height of the pandemic there was a huge shortage of hand sanitizer in my local community and this company stepped up to the plate. "We said look, we have this raw material, we absolutely can convert it into hand sanitizer. This is an opportunity for us to come together, not lose our minds and not get crazy. We all have the things that we need as a community to make ourselves safe and to really embrace one another (Dugan, 2020)."

This company put the health and safety of their community above making money. They saw that there was an opportunity to provide an essential product that was almost nowhere to be found, which was also good for the environment and avoid potential waste. As a consumer people look at businesses that give back and do the right thing and feel the need to help that business succeed. Its a win-win for the company, helping the community and they get coverage on the news for potentially more business.  Part of the relationship element for a sustainable company is supporting social causes (Hammond, & Christensen, 2016).
