Emily Discussion:

Chosen Perspective & Explanation

I have chosen to write my policy proposal from the perspective of a Director of Student Activities. I currently work in Student Affairs and my career goal is to continue working in Student Affairs. I believe that I have a decent background in this area to provide a realistic perspective as to what a Director would have concerns for or insights about. I also believe that writing from this perspective will prepare me for further work in this field. While I have some minor familiarity with student activities, I am no expert. I believe I will still need guidance on which policies are directly affecting student activities and what current trends would affect activities in the future. I am also not extremely familiar with the interdepartmental communication between admissions and student activities, and would need to understand all of the little things that professionals in both fields communicate about. It will also be important to understand a couple institution’s operations/policies than just the institution I currently work for.

Three Professionals

Listed below are three individuals I believe would be the most beneficial to connect with in order to gain more understanding about student activities and institutional, state and federal policies. I have “ranked” them from 1st to 3rd in regards to the knowledge that I believe they have about state and federal policies in particular.

Lake Erie College

Billie Dunn, [email protected]

Vice President of Student Affairs/ Title IX Coordinator

Lycoming College

Dan Miller, [email protected]

Vice President of Student Affairs/ Student Life

Mercyhurst University

Megan McKenna, [email protected]

Director of Residential Life and Student Conduct

I believe that it would be beneficial to receive VP Dunn’s perspective as I know she works closely with student activities at Lake Erie College. She oversees many departments and because of her high level of involvement and scope of awareness, she is extremely knowledgeable about higher education policies. VP Miller would be beneficial because he works for an institution in another state than VP Dunn. It would be beneficial to know if there are any major differences within state policies that could affect an admission’s policy. He is also knowledgeable about a wide range of student activities. Director McKenna would be able to provide a different perspective than my other two chosen individuals as she works for a larger undergraduate university. Institutional policies would more than likely differ, and it will be beneficial to have this different perspective. Director McKenna also has a plethora of knowledge about higher education policy.

AACRAO Trends

The AACRAO offers admission professionals with valuable resources and ethical guidelines (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, 2020). The website provides multiple links and resources to provide professionals with guidelines, standards and professional development opportunities so that the best practices are utilized in records management, admissions, enrollment management, student services and information technology (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, 2020). Currently, admission offices are working through the COVID-19 pandemic and how the current global situation affects graduation, retention and admission processes. The website also provides links to Financial Aid and additional resources that professionals may need, especially now (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, 2020). For the AACRAO, ensuring that institutions and admission offices maintain appropriate and ethical practices is a main concern.

NACAC Sources

While the NACAC website offers a plethora of information, policies and resources, a potential resource that I believe could be beneficial would be listening to one of the many podcasts that the website offers. The podcasts cover a range of information to financial aid letters, counseling students, and navigating the application processes (National Association for College Admission Counseling, 2020). I believe that the podcasts would be a great place to start for research and they are written for the common public’s understanding. Because the podcasts are completed by member-experts, the podcasts could be deemed as credible sources, although I would probably use a peer-reviewed article in a research paper before I used a podcast.

Another beneficial page on the website is the Relevant Court Cases under the Advocacy and Ethics tab (National Association for College Admission Counseling, 2020). Because this course focuses on higher education policy, it would be beneficial to myself to reference relevant course cases that impact student access, learning and admission policies. The site is helpful as it lists cases by subject so consumers can locate polices that directly impact different aspects of student/campus life (National Association for College Admission Counseling, 2020). This would be a credible source as I can access the legislative document and directly cite information from the court case. Utilizing this resource will allow me to stay up to date on the important policy and regulation changes happening with higher education.

Hope everyone is staying safe! Looking forward to hear other opinions and suggestions!

Roland Discussion:

Hello all,

Chosen Perspective and Why

I am going to go with the Director of Enrollment Management.  I chose this perspective because it is the direction I would like to with my career to eventually go.  Getting all the information in the realm of what I’d like to do would be most beneficial because I do not have any formal higher education training and my familiarity with the position is limited to research.

Three Professionals, Rank, and Rationale

I have “pre-ranked” these professionals based on job title and what I think their familiarity is with institutional, state, and federal policies related to college students’ access and success in higher education.  Pre-ranking is as follows:

Peru State College

Dr. Jesse Dorman

Vice President for Enrollment management and student affairs

Email:  [email protected]

Colby College

Meghan Grandolfo

Assistant Dean & Director of Enrollment Management

Email:  [email protected]

Swarthmore College

Andrew Moe

Director of Admissions

Email:  [email protected]

I would like to get the perspective on this topic by the Director of Admissions form Swarthmore College, Andrew Moe.  It is important to understand this perspective because it deals with applying to a program.  It is one of the first step a student will take before being fully enrolled in a program.  The perspective of the Assistant Dean & Director of Enrollment Management from Colby College, Meghan Grandolfo, is important because, as mentioned above, I have no formal training in this area.  It will be beneficial to analyze the perspective of a Director of Enrollment Management.  In addition, I would like to know the perspective of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs from Peru State College, Dr. Jesse Dorman, because it would be beneficial to get the perspective of someone who oversees the operation of the unit.

AACRAO

The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) develops and expands on higher education by providing the resources necessary to those who work in enrollment services (AACRAO, 2016).  This include recruitment, admissions, and enrollment professionals.  AACRAO support successful and ethical professional enrollment practices by holding the institutions accountable for these practices.  For example, to help guide recruitment, admission, and enrollment professionals, the AACRAO has developed principles of professional ethics for the affected stakeholders to follow.  They must carry out their duties with integrity, fairness, honesty, respect, avoid any conflicts between personal and professional interest, and submit data that is only complete, accurate, understandable, and truthful (AACRAO, 2016).

NACAC Sources

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has an abundance of resources that will be useful to me moving forward.  For example, in the area of professional development, they have both upcoming and on demand webinars designed to aid professional in policies, student success, and FAFSA updates (NACAC, 2020a).  In addition, in the area of advocacy and ethics, the NACAC provides an annual advocacy meeting where stakeholders can get more detailed information about the education policy landscape, develop their advocacy skills, and meet with elected officials(NACAC, 2020b).  The also provide monthly support in the for of a checklist.  This will help me stay on track and well informed on what is happening in higher education.  Thanks for stopping by everyone!
