· Describe the behaviors apparent for each disorder in this scenario (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder).
A behavior usually seen in attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder is excessive motor activity; they are unable to stay still for long periods. They are easily distracted and impulsive (Morgan, 2020). In oppositional defiant disorder, the patient tends to be angry and show unruly behavior more frequently than not (Morgan, 2020).
· If this behavior becomes worse and Ryan starts to violate the rights of others, what medical diagnosis will be given and why?
Ryan can be diagnosed with conduct disorder and or antisocial personality disorder. Oppositional defiant disorder can turn into conduct disorder because the behaviors are the same type but more severe (Morgan, 2020). Antisocial personality disorder is a possible diagnosis because patients with conduct disorder and oppositional disorder have a greater risk of developing the disorder (Morgan, 2020).
· Discuss at least two types of medication appropriate to treat Ryan and support your choices with rationale and credible resources
Methylphenidate is used to treat ADHD. It increases attention span, and it is a fast-acting stimulant (Vallerand, 2018). 70 to 80 percent of children have fewer ADHD symptoms when taking this type of medication (CDC, 2020).
Clonidine can be prescribed to improve ADHD and decrease disruptive behaviors (BCH, n.d.). This medication can be prescribed by itself or in adjunct to a stimulant (Vallerand, 2018).
· Describe why therapy for the parent is important in this scenario, including at least two supporting rationales.
A diagnosis of ADHD and ODD affects the child, the parents, and other family members. Therapy for the parents is crucial because it can create stability and restore order for the child and in the home. Behavioral therapy teaches parents how to prepare for potential tantrums and other problematic behavior (BCH, n.d.). Behavior therapy with children included can be effective because the child and parents are learning together, creating a better understanding of what the child is going through (BCH, n.d.).

Describe the behaviors apparent for each disorder in this scenario (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder).
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition characterized by an inability to focus attention or to inhibit impulsive, hyperactive behavior; it is associated with behavior that results in poor performance in educational, social, or work settings (Block, et al, 2021). The behaviors that are apparent for Ryan are that he was unable to remain in one place for more than a minute or two, along with a poor performance in school.
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavior disorder whose symptoms first present in childhood. It is characterized by intense opposition to authority figures and peers, including hostility, aggression, screaming, and tantrums (Biscontini, 2020). Ryan displayed ODD behaviors such as refusing to listen to adults and comply with the rules. Ryan would throw temper tantrums when he did not get his way. When Ryan got a little older he started bullying kids at school.
If this behavior becomes worse and Ryan starts to violate the rights of others, what medical diagnosis will be given and why?
If Ryan's behavior becomes worse and he starts to violate the rights of others he could be diagnosed with an antisocial personality disorder or conduct disorder. An antisocial personality disorder is characterized by a pattern of behaviors and thinking that demonstrates a disregard for the welfare of others, conventional systems of rules, and authority figures (Lilienfeld, 2021). Conduct disorder is a pattern of behavior in which both the rights of others and age-appropriate social norms or rules are repeatedly violated (Lilienfeld, 2021).
Discuss at least two types of medication appropriate to treat Ryan
Methylphenidate would be a good medication for Ryan. Methylphenidate is a stimulant and has the best evidence for the treatment of ADHD. Methylphenidate blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine into the presynaptic neuron and increases the release of these monoamines into the extraneuronal space (Morgan, 2020). This medication could help Ryan focus and calm down. Divalproex could help Ryan as it is a mood-stabilizing anticonvulsant that helps with the reduction of aggression and irritability (Morgan, 2020). This medication could help Ryan's anger issues.
Describe why therapy for the parent is important in this scenario
Treatment for young children often involves parental management training, school-based therapies, and individual therapy (Biscontini, 2020). Treatment of teenagers often includes parental management training and individual therapy (Biscontini, 2020). Parenting children diagnosed with ODD and ADHD can be frustrating and exhausting. The techniques used to successfully parent a child with ODD are often very different than standard parenting practices. Parents who exhibit signs of stress are more likely to use ineffective parenting strategies. For this reason, parents of children diagnosed with ODD must carefully monitor their personal stress levels and minimize any external stressors (Biscontini, 2020). Parents should focus on age-appropriate expectations and limits, and then use positive reinforcement to apply those limits (Biscontini, 2020). Ryan's family may not have the education on these disorders to know how to deal with Ryan and the problems they are facing therapy is very important for Ryan and his family to understand why these behaviors are happening and hopefully get control of the situation before it becomes too late.
