Response Paper One: Character Analysis of Do the Right Thing

REQUIREMENTS: 3 pages in proper MLA format. (For a detailed example that also provides information on in-text citations and references, CHAPTER 10 is central to completing this assignment.) 

 

NOTE: There is simply no way to do this assignment effectively without reading the assigned chapters 1-3 and 10, or watching the movie in its entirety. Again, chapter 10 gives cues on how to approach watching a movie while also prepping to write about it. You should also be drawing on the vocabulary and powerpoints available in the Unit One content.

So, remember, we are focusing for this essay on CHARACTER, though realize that things like setting, costuming, editing, etc ALL contribute to development and you may end up mentioning them in the service of character. 

 

THE ASSIGNMENT: Pick THREE characters and explore them based on the bulleted points below.  You don’t have to answer every point, but I would say you need to fully address at least three of the bullets for each character. The essay needs to start with a general introduction that summarizes the film and characters, with a thesis statement, and then the body paragraphs. In the conclusion, address what relevance a critique of these characters has on the world we are living in presently. Again, look to the sample in the book for an idea of the language I am looking for. 

 

• How would you describe each character’s motivations? How does his or her motivation contribute to his or her development as a character? How does his or her motivation contribute to the telling of the film’s story? Are any character’s motivations unclear or surprising and, if so, how does this questioning of character motivation contribute to the telling of the film’s story?

 

• Do any of the film’s characters fall into discernable types (e.g., the all-American hero, the nutty professor)? If so, how are these types used in the telling of the film’s story?

 

• Focus on a scene involving a dialogue between two or more characters. What does

the dialogue tell you about the characters?

 

• Are any of the characters played by a movie star? If so, how does the movie star’s

discrete identity—his or her biography and previous film roles—affect your reading

of the film character and the film as a whole?
