Response Paper 5

1. Describe the Foundation its basic characteristics and the grant application process, including the specific method for submitting an application for funding. The Foundation funding source for the Penn Center, Inc that I chose is the "Broadening Narratives". "Broadening Narratives" funds will be used to transform its York Bailey Museum and other visitor experiences across its 47-acre campus, create a new, onsite preservation and storage space that will safeguard the center’s artifacts; and establish a new director of exhibitions to guide the creation of exhibitions and interpretative experiences for discovering and sharing Gullah Geechee culture and history. “This grant will allow us to continue to interpret, safeguard and share the heritage of the Gullah Geechee community. As the only African American National Historic Landmark District in the state of South Carolina, we have a unique opportunity to share Reconstruction history and to serve as national advocates for preserving Gullah Geechee culture. The support of the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation allows us to continue this important work through new exhibitions and visitor experiences aimed at empowering and providing access to diverse audiences looking to understand our history.” I found that it only takes three steps to apply for this grant. They are: 1. Choose the funding application that best fits your needs(Business, Housing, Schooling, or Individual Funding). 2. Fill out registration form and pay the small processing fee of $29.95. 3. Get internet access to all funding resources.

2. Explain why the organization should seek this funding source over others? This organization should seek this funding over others because "Broadening Narratives" is based on supporting land conservation, artistic vitality, and regional collections for the people of the Chicago region and the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This funding would be good for Penn Center because it will allow them to continue to interpret, safeguard and share the heritage of the Gullah Geechee community. As the only African American National Historic Landmark District in the state of South Carolina, we have a unique opportunity to share Reconstruction history and to serve as national advocates for preserving Gullah Geechee culture. The support of the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation allows us to continue this important work through new exhibitions and visitor experiences aimed at empowering and providing access to diverse audiences looking to understand our history.”

3. Discuss which staff members should lead this fundraising approach, how will volunteers be incorporated in this approach, and what are some external partnership opportunities? We all know that board members have to have the respect of fundraising, so generally, staff members such as the Interim Executive Director, Executive Administrative Assistant, Public Information Coordinator, Director of Education & Personel, etc. There are several ways volunteers can be incorporated in fundraising like hosting special events, serving as an advocate, lending resources and other skills, participating in sessions, and open doors for solicitation, etc.To get info for volunteer you can go to info@penncenter,com. Some external partnership opportunities could be like starting a personal fundraising page, sharing on social media, attending fundraising events, and donating money, supplies, time.

4. Describe the financial goals, discuss other appropriate (non-financial) measurements of success for this funding source. I feel the financial goal would be to keep Penn Center's mission alive and that is to promote and preserve Penn’s true history and culture through its commitment to education, community development and social justice. Of course it will take money at times to do so.
