Use three examples from the movie “Shanghai Calling” to discuss how the American professional (Sam) successfully or unsuccessfully adapted to the life and work in China. Based on your analysis, provide some advice to people who want to work or study in China.

 Your response paper should be 1-2 pages long, typed, double-spaced.  Do not just retell the plots of the film.  Use characters, scenes, symbols, situations in the film to address your

point, and integrate what you have learned from the class to support your analysis.

 You can also use other resources to substantiate your argument, or you can use them as counterpoint—that is, you can argue your point against them.

Grading Rubric (Total: 10 points)

1. Thesis: speaks to thesis and contains accurate information (2 points) 2. Logical flow of Ideas: all ideas in the paper flow logically (2 points) 3. Use of evidence: demonstrates a good understanding of the ideas presented in the

movie (2 points) 4. Analysis: critically evaluates/responds to the ideas presented in the movie (2

points) 5. Writing Quality: clearly written and well-edited for grammar and spelling,

including complete sentences. (2 points)
