Question:

Search "scholar.google.com" for a company or school that has reported issues, problems, concerns about their backup procedures. Discuss the issue of securing backups. There have been several incidents lately in which backup media containing personal customer information were lost or stolen. How should backup media be secured? What about off-site storage of backups?

Article answer:

Several strategies can be implemented by an organization to secure their backup media. Though backups are considered to be important, mishandling and the mismanagement of these backups can lead to security issues. It is necessary for the organization to create effective security policies to ensure that backup data systems are properly protected. Data backup systems should be included in disaster recovery plans (Amvrosiadis & Bhadkamkar, 2015). This ensures that the organization is properly protected from malware outbreaks or malicious attacks from employees. Access rights for the backup should not be assigned to those who have no clearance to access required information.

Password protection on backup, is also necessary to ensure that any Individual who attempts to gain unauthorized access is denied. The encryption of backups is necessary to ensure that the available hardware and software supports the system. Data security should be guaranteed when the organization chooses to use a cloud backup. This is because this method of data protection means that the information is entrusted to an outside organization (Amvrosiadis & Bhadkamkar, 2015). Businesses should therefore investigate security procedures adopted by other cloud providers before storing their data with third parties. Issues such as physical security and encryption protocols should be made clear to the organization to ensure they are able to guarantee the security of their data.

The Consideration of off-site storage for backups is necessary. Off-site storage for backups are preferred particularly when the organization wants to ensure its data from incidents such as fire and other man-made disasters. This ensures that natural and manmade disasters do not affect the data center advisory (Amvrosiadis & Bhadkamkar, 2015). At times, information that is stored on chips and external drives could be easily interfered with if it is not properly stored on off-site premises. It is therefore necessary for backup media to be properly handled to ensure that critical data is available in the event of a disaster that leads to data loss.
