Question:

Using the MLB steroids case as an example example, explain how unethical choices by some players harms players who comply with the rules.

In case of MLB steroids case there is a big question “is it unethical to consume performance drugs to gin competitive advantage?”. While the analysis proved it is necessary for players to consume these drugs to get paid extra benefits and huge salaries, it is unethical practice. It may give them short-term benefits in the industry; but in long-term they will not have basic benefits and their presence will not be of any importance. But some players accept money and chose this way as fame, money, power Del Cid, H. (2007). come their way and they have huge demand in the market, A ban is imposed on steroids and after certain period ban is lifted off; it happened couple of times this way but finally they came up with new rules to ban players who take steroids as it impacts the career of players who doesn’t consume them. This ban is a positive thing in sports industry as it helps other players who are ethical. Taking steroids is like cheating everyone and they are unsafe, most importantly the create inequalities among players. Players who are ethical feel demotivated at times and quit playing totally as there is no scope for them to gain any advantage and make money. Players who take steroids should not be credited for their game as they make success too easy. This is not only unethical but also illegal. This unethical behavior also has serious consequences on both coaches and players. Coaches should be aware of their students behavior and make sure they stay legal and ethical all the time while they are playing, in this way it doesn’t harm players who stay ethical in the game.

Question:

Using the MLB steroids case as an example, explain how unethical choices by some players harms players who comply with the rules.

Despite being risky, steroids are also considered lethal. Steroids are in most cases used by athletes or sports persons who wish to gain an undue advantage over their competitors. The case of using MLB steroids exposes the unethical choices made by some players as well as how some of these choices affects players that are compliant with the rules and regulations of the game. The case further reveals that there exists a positive relation between the salaries and the performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). This is likely to encourage players to consume these PEDs. Ethics is violated in an instance where the players use steroids as they intend to gain an undue advantage and enhance their performance (Jennings, 2012). Such led to the establishment of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to deal with unethical cases arising from players trying to obtain advantage over their fellow competitors.

In an instance where a player if established to have been using steroids, the entire team could be barred from engaging in the competition. Basically unethical behavior leads to loss in business of a team, thus affecting other players and team members, a diminished reputation as well as physical health of those involved with the use (Jennings, 2009). Approximately 279 MLB players were suspended for using steroids and the MLB commission further declared that it was the ethical action they would have taken so as to serve justice to the other players who abide by the rules, regulations and the provisions by MLB. McKinley (2000) argues that intake of steroids could energize the growth of muscles and at the same time relieve a player from injuries as well as pain. However, using steroids without a prescription by a clinician is against the rules and regulations by MLB (Jennings, 2012). Therefore, they have banned the use of steroids as well as performance enhancing drugs such that competition could be fair and based on honesty.
