Hello,
As I went back to review my video as the social worker, I think I demonstrated good active listening skills. I was able to repeat back the information Alex was relaying to me, which can also be called paraphrasing. I maintained good eye contact and appropriate body language. These two skills demonstrate to the client that you care about what they have to say and are engaged in the conversation. Empathy and advocacy are two very important skills during an interaction with a client, (Zastrow et al 2019). I also believe I created a safe space for Alex to be able to speak freely about her feelings.
Potential impacts of ethnic and racial micro aggression on psychological development in adolescence could result in the adolescent, showing signs of low self-esteem, signs of depression, prolonged stress, trauma, and anxiety. Alex mentioned in the video, that her coach made a comment that made her feel like a black girl couldn’t do cheerleading, the recent shooting of an unarmed black man, attending a school that is predominantly white and not being able to focus, (Walden, 2021) all these factors can have an impact on Alex if not handled appropriately by a professional. This type of micro aggression may cause Alex to never want to pursue cheerleading or any other activity she may be interested in, with the fear that this could happen again.
As Alex’s assigned social worker, I would develop coping skills to use in the current situation and future situations of this type. I would seek support from groups of others impacted by similar situations. I would also assist Alex with finding her voice and becoming a self-advocate which may lead her to speak out and share her own experiences. At times our own experiences and sharing can assist others with finding their own voice against microaggression or other challenging situtations.

RESPONSE2
Reflect on the practice skills you demonstrated in the video.
This week was hard for me. I have never experienced this aimed at me. I need to learn how to begin. Sometimes I feel like the problem because I don't understand when things are hurtful and why – because I haven't grown up in the same situations. I always feel like I am uneducated and ignorant.
In this video, I tried hard not to assume and not be privileged (if that is the right word). I tried to be empathetic while allowing Alex to take the lead. I tried to fight for advocacy without presuming I knew how to fight the battles. I tried to learn from her and not fall into my ignorance.
Explain the potential impacts of ethnic and racial microaggressions on adolescent psychological development.
One potential impact of racial microaggression is negative self-concept. Not only can these actions affect the individual's self-concept – they can also be passed down to the children of these individuals (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, & Hessenauer, 2019). These acts can also cause depression and anxiety and lead to other mental health issues as the individuals try to cope. The video shows that microaggressions can also impact behaviors such as schoolwork and interactions with others.
Describe how you would work with the student to curb these negative impacts. Draw on the values and ethics of the profession in your response.
I want to build up the self-worth and self-concept of the people I work with. I would want to help them fight to make a change. I would want to fight for justice for all the people hurt by ignorance. I want to educate the community on why these actions are hurtful. The values of integrity and social justice are essential.
