What types of networks have you used? Our organization utilizes Local Area Networks (LAN) Hubs, Servers, Intranet, and the Internet for our particular manufacturing facility and other manufacturing facilities throughout the US. We utilize A Wide Area Networks (WAN) to communicate between our Alabama and Texas Facilities. I have hear talk of servers in both Texas and Alabama that handle issues all our company data. These two off site systems hold data from all of our facilities. What are some experiences you have had concerning the common threats listed above? As with any computer system our organization limits Internet and email access to entry-level employees and users on the floor who do not require access to this type of service. They have access based on parameters set up by our IT department. This helps to prevent outside computer threats from viruses or malicious attachments associated with emails and random surfing on the Internet. The possibility of down loading malware or other cyber based attacks on our network continues to be a risk but our IT department utilizes all available recourses to help prevent these possibilities. In my experience giving employees with idle time access to the Internet is a recipe for trouble. Each manager in our organization has a password to get into our personal terminals. We have passwords to get into our enterprise software program. Finally department managers have passwords to get into our labor management software. I think having all the separate systems is a good thing because it helps to limit access to systems and this in turn helps to prevent the possibility of malicious software to enter our systems. It can also help to identify associates that might be in our organization to harm our organization. Passwords are very much like a fingerprint at a crime scene. How does a network topology affect data communication? As described in our text a couple of disadvantages of network topology are if the central host fails, the entire network becomes inoperable. The second point was the cables required to set up the entire system. I believe the advantages could well out weight the disadvantages. I think topology can have a very positive affect on data if the system is set up properly. If I were an IT manager I would create a ghost server that mirrored the main system with a junction switch capable of taking one system down while the other system was being repaired. Both systems would run in tandem and constantly mirror each other, but when an issue was found the faulty server would shut down and the main system would go into a safety mode to protect data until the issue was resolved.
