Write an essay (approx. 800-1000 words) responding to this prompt:
What should an art museum be in the 21st century?
Your essay needs to address the following issues and questions based on your readings and in- class lectures. The points below should give you a clear idea of the information that needs to be covered, however, your paper should not read like a list of questions and answers. Your paper should be organized as a coherent essay with an introduction, a body, and a conclusion explaining a clear thesis statement.
1. According to Karsten Schubert, what are the typical characteristics of “the new museum;” what gets prioritized, and what gets sacrificed? What are the potential problems that arise when museums behave too much like corporations? How does LACMA (The Los Angeles County Museum of Art) reflect the strategies of “the new museum?”
2. In Bogumil Jewsiewicki’s article “Museums for the People?” how does the context of Lubumbashi show the need to re-think the purpose of the museum? How does Jewsiewicki (in the project Memoires de Lubumbashi) attempt to adapt the Lubumbashi Museum in a way that responds to the specific needs of the people living there? 3. Describe the current museum boom in China: how many museums have been built, who is building them, and how are they being run? According to Winnie Wong’s article, what is driving this boom? In what ways do these new Chinese museums reflect Karsten Schubert’s discussion of “the new museum”? In developing your essay, make use of your lecture notes and the assigned readings for this section. Your essay should draw on specific examples from all of these readings. A strong paper will convey understanding of key points in each of the following essays/databases and will incorporate relevant concepts and details in addressing issues in the questions listed above.

Recommendations:
Familiarize yourself with the questions before you begin your readings. Take notes on relevant points or concepts raised in the readings. Keep these questions in mind during lectures and highlight key ideas in your notes. After each reading and lecture take some time to write down your impressions (you may want to do this as a free-write). Organize your ideas with an outline. Write multiple drafts. Before turning in the final draft, I recommend that you make an appointment with a tutor in the Writer’s Resource Lab: http://www.cla.csulb.edu/departments/english/wrl/. They can help you catch errors that you may not have noticed.
Cite all sources correctly:
If you are using someone else’s words, they need to be either thoroughly paraphrased and cited, or they need to be put in quotes and cited. Incomplete paraphrasing (changing a few words in every sentence, for example) is a form of plagiarism. Paraphrasing means conveying specific ideas and information in your own words; it involves totally rewriting the sentences, while maintaining the correct intent of the writer you are paraphrasing. Paraphrased content also needs to be cited.
Paraphrasing is an important tool, in many cases a direct quote is not necessary. However, care needs to be taken to paraphrase correctly.
Be sure to thoroughly cite any information taken from the readings listed above using the standard MLA or Chicago style format. (The fact that you are using class readings does not excuse you from citing all quoted and paraphrased materials correctly).
Upload your essay to the dropbox and review your Originality Report:
A couple of days before the final draft is due, upload your paper to the dropbox. Check back later to view the Originality Report. Check carefully to see if you are citing all of your sources correctly. Correct any issues you encounter. Then, resubmit a revised draft and include a note explaining that it is your updated draft.

Paper Length: Paper length requirements are based on word count. Word count is based on the words in the body of your essay, not on headings, bibliography, etc. note: If you are struggling to meet a minimum length requirement on a paper, go back to the drawing board: brainstorm, make lists, freewrite. Being unable to meet the minimum length is usually a sign that you have not put enough work into the project yet.
