Assignment 14
Discussion 1
Situational awareness is derived from warfare that aims at raising understanding of threats and how they are likely to change over a given period. The change is expected may be due to fluctuations in different environmental variables (Amoroso, 2012). For any company, situational awareness means an understanding of the threats that can befall the data and the organization's financial status. In every organization's processes, some ideas guide it, and in this case, we will be able to note the use of alarms and alert systems.
Situational awareness is a driver for detection and response controls since the idea of the use of alarms in a company is an effect of the same. In this case, any company using alarms can raise the response of the stakeholders above expectations. In the case of a disaster as either library or a natural one, an organization's response can be raised through alert systems, and a disaster can be detected easily (Amoroso, 2012). A company without situational awareness may befall losses as, and as a fact, data can be lost, which will also have an impact on the financial status of the organization.
The case of protecting data from potential attackers may seem difficult, especially when no one is expecting. It is then clear to note that to identify the attackers; there should be situational awareness, such as the use of systems in detecting the intrusions. Reviewing logs of corporate firewalls can be a task that may not necessarily reveal attacks on the appliances but will only raise the alarm to the protection of documentation (Amoroso, 2012). Lastly, it is important to have created situational awareness for an organization since it is a guideline for responding to controls and detecting attackers to a system.
Discussion 2
Situational awareness can be described as “Within a volume of time and space, the perception of an enterprise’s security posture and its threat environment; the comprehension/meaning of both taken together (risk); and the projection of their status into the near future,” (Gawron, 2019). The most advantageous thing about situational awareness is that it offers an aspect of dynamicity, this means that it offers a way of dealing with new and evolving threats.
To understand how situational awareness becomes a driver for detection and response control, it is important to understand how it works. Situational awareness is a mindset. It is not a skill. The first thing with situational awareness is recognizing that risks exist (Gawron, 2019). This means that one has to eliminate the denial that threats exists because they actually do. In this area, it is also important to trust intuition or “gut” feeling (Gawron, 2019). The subconscious tends to notice things that are at times unquantifiable. This therefore means that if a leader or just a person trusts their gut feeling to know if something is okay or not, there is a high possibility of finding a problem and therefore realizing it before it can cause serious damage.
Situational awareness leads to critical decision making. After detecting the problem, then the person in question can make a quick response. Some responses will require that they be made at the spur of the moment while others may need some discussion with other parties (Gawron, 2019). All this will depend on the kind of problem there is. The person who has realized the problem will be in a position to make these decisions which may make or break the project or system.
All this shows how situational awareness works to ensure detection and response control.
1.Evaluate one pro and con above proposed above discussions
Response Requirements:
1. Be 1 paragraphs in length for each Discussion
2. Your responses to above discussions must be more than a simple "Good job" or "I agree with your post". They must also not just be "Let me add to your post..." Instead, your responses to each other should do three things:
1. Acknowledge the above discussions with some form of recognition.
2. Relate the discussions to something you have learned or are familiar with
3. Add to the conversation by asking additional questions about the discussion, or discussing the topic further.
