Strategic Information Systems: Miguel Ahrend

When considering information systems, many people’s first idea of what that would entail is social networking or businesses. Following viewing the video and reading “Introduction to Information Systems in Organizations”, I immediately thought of something more work related. The reason I thought of something more work related was due to this specific part of the reading that stated, “Information systems collect, organize, process, and make available or distribute data.”, (UMGC, 2022, Introduction to Information Systems in Organizations).

I work for the United States Army Criminal Investigations Division, we use databases regularly. Prior to this weeks course material I would have never considered some of these databases information systems. One of the databases specifically is our fingerprinting systems. When a person is arrested we input their biographical information, fingerprints, and images into a machine that processes the information and is sent to a database. Once we create the rap sheet it stores the information as I said, then allows us to control, find, and access the information as described in “What is an Information System”, (Charlie Love, 2013). This system communicates with almost all law enforcement agencies in order for us to better identify individuals criminal history. Not only can we access this information but for a fee the FBI can also provide a “rap sheet” for requesting individuals for something such as potential new employment (FBI, IDHSC, 2016). Other information systems are used as well and all of them are an essential part of the job.
