Response to this classmate:

How are the values of empowerment and/or citizen participation reflected in the podcast? Provide specific examples to support your responses.

· Empowerment is when people get the support, they need that is right for them, people should be equal citizens, respected, and confident in their communities. In the podcast Demario Davis talks about being a human with empathy and going across the border to help families that where living in cages. He used his resources to provide families with basic necessities.

What other community psychology values are reflected in the podcast and how so? Be sure to provide specific supporting examples.

·  Another community psychology value that was reflected in the podcast was social justice, empathy for others, diversity and collaboration. Demario Davis reflected upon these value by stating that he grew up poor and that if it wasn’t for his football coach in college he could have spent a lot more time in jail since his mom was poor and could not afford his bail, he stated how many people spend months in jail because they cannot pay their bail, this is valuable time that they spend away from their children all because they are poor. He makes a point how if people were more empathetic the world would be a better place. He would want someone from his community to help him when he is in a tough place. Demario Davis talks about being a human with empathy and him going across the border to help immigrated families that where living in cages for a chance at a better life. He used his resources to provide families with basic necessities and tried to bring families back together, he knew what it was like to be in a hard place since he came from a poor family and even went to jail, he stated how god gave him another chance in life and wants to give back to others. He also stated that as a African American man his community should support other communities in need and that every community should support one another instead of discriminating each other so our communities can be successful together.

What different types of power (power over, power from, power to, integrative power) are at play, and how so?  Be sure to provide specific supporting examples.

· Power over is the capacity of an individual or group to dominate others through control of valued resources or punishment for example, a person who is rich has more opportunity and resources to be successful in life than someone who comes from a poor background. Power to is the ability of individuals or groups to purse their own goals and develop their capacities for example, giving children from a poor neighborhood the chance to go to college and become successful. Integrative power is the capacity to work together, build groups, bind people together, and inspire loyalty, an example of this is in the podcast where Demario Davis states that if everyone works together and support one another, they will be able to unite the children living in cages back with their families.
