Introduction:
After grasping a deeper understanding of Covey eight characteristic, the following three characterics I identify myself as are continually learning, believing in other people, and they see life as an adventure. As I read about these three characteristics, I’m constantly reminded by my colleague, how I possess these traits.
Continually learning:
Learning and being abreast with the changes that are happening in education has also been something that I pride myself on. Professional development at the school or district level is something I seek to do each summer or throughout the school year. I believe all teachers should seek professional development each summer at least to help sharpen their skills as an educator.
According to Covey (1991), “principle-center people are constantly educated by their experiences. They read, they seen training, take classes, they listen to others, they through both their ears and their eyes.” I agree with this statement wholeheartedly because we are growing professionals who must seek different pathways in order to better our craft as educators and leaders. Many leaders and experts in the field will have a great deal of trust for those individuals that are continuous learner because they see how competent these individuals are within their content and understanding of issues in education.
Believing in Others:
As we matriculated through life, we all had our sharing of shortcomings. However, we were able to achieve to higher heights because of the determination and perseverance we as individuals possess. As a future leader in the field of education, I want my colleagues to understand, I have their best interest at heart despite the situation because we are all in this together. Even though, there will be times where constructive criticism may be giving, I still believe they will get the job done. For the past 6 years, I have been the team leader for Junior High and I must say, through it all my team just trust me and I trust them as we make sound decisions to better our team and ensure the students are taking care of. When we reflect at the end of day, semester or year, we can attest to the growth that was made amongst the team throughout the year.
They see life as an Adventure:
Living life like is golden is my model. As a leader, I want everyone to experience their own success and live as if it is their last day on earth. For the past nine years, my co-workers would attest to the fact that I live my life to the fullest despite what situations may come upon me. Everyone deserve a new chance every day because they would been having a bad day the previous day. We as leaders should not be judgmental; we must live the life of an individual that show the world there is more to offer in the world then being a downer for others.
The leader that see life as an adventure will have multitudes of followers because these followers will understand and trust that leader as they progressive move in their profession. For example, my principal has shown me the way to be a leader in various capacities on the campus. As he guided the way, he thought be how to get the buy-in from the teachers so they will believe in the works that we are doing.
