There are multiple procedures that are taken by police while investigating burglaries, the first one is to approach the scene and inconspicuously observe, while taking note, of all vehicles and personnel at the scene of the burglary. After the initial observations, take note of the building, type of entries, the loot that is housed at the building, any identifiable trademarks and the time the burglary took place. The third procedure involves taking the victim's statement and have the victim walk with you through the crime scene to determine where the victim was at the time of the robbery. Also to determine if there was anyone with a grudge against the victim, recent visitors, and to obtain a list of stolen property that was stolen. This step wd also include checking for any history of claims on insurance. The next step would be to gather any evidence to determine the tools used, along with any evidence of blood or fibers. Evidence gathered also include tool marks, footprints/fingerprints leading into and out of the scene, also trace any evidence or stolen items that have or had serial numbers. The 5th step involves looking for any possible suspects and witnesses to the burglary at the scene. Also determine any informants at the scene and keep tabs on any known receivers that frequently purchase any certain stolen items that could have came from that specific burglary. The final step being to notify surrounding departments of the burglary and items stolen, also to work along with the other departments on any files and leads.

Evidence could be from anything such as tool marks, tools used and any fibers at the scene all the way up to footprints, fingerprints and blood left at the scene. Even discarded cigarette butts could help identify possible suspects.  Evidence for burglaries can be found at possible entry points such as windows, doors, stairwells or ladders.
