Read Chapters 3, 4, and 5 in Social Psychology. You already have the book
From your perspective, how does the material in your textbook on the topics of self-presentation and social perception relate to the passage from Matthew 7:3-5, in which Jesus asks: "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brothers' eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eyes when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
Re: Topic 2 DQ 1
Instructor Louis and Class,
Our textbook in chapter 3 states that self presentation is "presenting the person we would like others to believe we are" (Gilovich et al., 2019). I am not familiar with the bible at all so I at first I thought this was more of one man wanting to present himself as kind by taking care of the brother before himself. However, I did some research on the meaning behind the verse and it made much more sense as to how this verse relates to self presentation. This verse is basically saying how are you going to pass any kind of judgment when ones own vision is flawed. One must clear his/her own obstacles first so that his/her vision is not flawed. It is stating that ones own perspective is sometimes flawed and that needs to be addressed before one can address the flaws of others(Matthew 7:3-5 “Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log...,” 2012). So then yes, maybe the first guy is trying to present himself as a helpful and selfless man but has unfavorable intentions by doing so. Or the first man, is giving advise to the second guy from an unclear, uniformed perspective therefore his helpfulness is in fact hurtful to the situation.

I hope I am on the right track here, feedback is welcome!
Class,
Self-presentation is to present yourself as the person you would like others to believe you are (Gilovich, Keltner, Chen & Nisbett, 2018). Social perception is the ability to make accurate interpretations about other people from their appearance and communication (Social perception: Definition and Explanation, 2017). I am not too good at understanding passages from the Bible. I believe that the overall message in Matthew 7:3-5 is why do you look at the flaws in someone else when you have your own flaws, it makes you a hypocrite. The material from the textbook relates to the passage because the hypocritical brother is making a social perception about his brother that he has flaws. The hypocritical brother is also giving the self-presentation that he is better than his other brother and is try to help him by pointing out his flaws.
