Doctoral learners becoming researcher/scholars must be able to produce original, written academic works and to evaluate the calibre and originality of their writing and the writing of others. At the same time, all research has its foundation in other research. How can you as a doctoral level researcher balance producing your own original research with recognizing and crediting the works you use as your research foundation?

The main thing I think I can do as a doctoral level researcher to avoid plagiarism is be diligent in my citations and paraphrasing. Waldschmidt (2018) explains, “When paraphrasing, one mistake writers often make is not significantly altering the phrasing of the original author. When quoting, learners commonly misplace quotation marks, omit a page number or reference to location, which is a requirement for quotations, or omit a the citation entirely” (Plagiarism and Turnitin, para. 4). The way to avoid accidental plagiarism to learn APA citations forwards and backwards. Also you need to make sure that when you paraphrase in your prior research section that you change the original author’s words enough that is an actual paraphrase. Some ways that I can ensure that I give proper credit is using peers to evaluate your papers. This can build the relationship piece of my doctoral identity as well ensure that I am proper credit to foundations of my research.

I think the key to appropriately balancing the production of my own research, while also accurately crediting sources, is adhering to the critical thinking process. Plagiarism is a consequence of placing emphasis on achievement rather than knowledge and the creation thereof (Bretag, 2013). A focus on knowledge and knowledge creation throughout the research process will encourage me to rely on my own critical thinking skills rather than solely trusting and using existing literature. Within the conceptualization and identification phases of critical thinking, the researcher is exploring the current literature and identifying a gap that can only come from independent thought and questioning. It is during the analysis and synthesis stages at which the researcher must begin to maintain scholarly integrity. Within literature analysis, the author should be properly accrediting information that supports the researcher’s thesis through the use of a formatting guide such as the APA publication manual. Then the researcher can begin the synthesis phase, without fear of plagiarism, in which they utilize the existing data as support for their original thesis.

In agreement with Bretag’s (2013) suggestions on the matter of plagiarism, GCU’s holistic emphasis placed on academic integrity has further encouraged me to become a responsible and honest scholar. Through the strict adherence to APA guidelines, consistent literature review and synthesis, and rigorous critical thinking discussion topics, I have personally seen myself grow immensely in the area of academic integrity.

DISSERTATION DEVELOPMENT 7: Why Some Do Not Achieve their Dissertation Goals

In the past several weeks we have examined how to choose an appropriate topic. This week I would like to share with you some reasons that the College of Doctoral Students has identified regarding why some learners do not achieve their dissertations goals (or do so in a less than timely manner) –

· Do not think through how a doctorate can change their future and serve their purpose

· Define a topic purely out of their head or out of their past rather than based on the literature

· Treat courses as a single event

· Do not use courses to build their expertise in the literature in their field

· Do not proactively develop expertise in their selected methodology and design

· Believe their level of professional writing is excellent… or at least good enough

· Believe they already do outstanding work…they have gotten all A’s

· Do not “really” accept the need for iterative constructive feedback

· Do not proactively manage their time to start dissertation work in year one

Again, extra research time is not built into your program until much later and if you wait until those classes to start researching your topic, you will be behind!

What temptations might doctoral students encounter that would challenge their ethics? How does your worldview influence your adherence to academic integrity?

According to Bretag, T. (2013) Academic integrity incorporates a number of morals including honesty, trust, respect, fairness, and responsibility, ‘‘Academic integrity involves ensuring that in research, and in teaching and learning, both staff and students act in an honest way”. Studies shows Bretag, T. (2013) that one in five postgraduate research students had never heard of academic integrity and two in five postgraduate students said they did not know whether their university had an academic integrity policy. With that being said its still no excuses as scholars we know right from wrong. I am actually excited to attend a college with academic integrity based in Christian worldview. How will I go about utilizing sound habit and behavior to prevent plagiarism? I will take heed to the sound habit while taking notes put sentences in my own words, using references and citations when I do use cited information. It’s easy to plagiarize intentionally because there are scholars that know what they are doing so they willing to intentionally write things down word for word step by step not having the academic integrity to be successful in the coursework, doctoral writing and the dissertation research. Temptations doctoral students might encounter that would challenge their ethics. In home family issue, divorce, parenthood, work, child custody hearing/court deadlines on assignments, drugs and alcohol, not having the enhance writing skills or reading skills or knowing the writing format APA style, not knowing how to do research, all these encounters can cause temptation. My world view influences my adherence to academic integrity by knowing the hard work, dedication and time I put into my academic work. I grew up and was raised off that word integrity, I had to show that in life skills, friendship and as a teammate.
