Within the text, we learn that production-centered management, there is a process within this

one that has little variance. Its highest priority is considered to be the outcomes and

production of these. The management is focused on ensuring that there is the right amount of

inputs needed to produce the expected outcomes. Within this, employees must be able to keep

up and ensure production is being met if they cannot keep up with the production the

employee is replaced. The way that their work is completed is similar as well employees have

little control in changing the process. In people-centered management, outputs are created

based on how willing the workers are to take out the outputs. Each outcome varies and the

way the output is created also varies. In this management style managers focus on the

employees rather than the number of outputs (Fallon L., & McConnell C, 2014).

Some examples of production-centered management in health care, could be seen in the

pharmaceutical industry in which the production of medication is fast and this would be the

output, little variance. A laboratory test can also be seen as production as there Is little

variance in the output and the same process are done by lab techs. Billing would be another

example as there are, certain numbers that must be met at specific time intervals and it’s the

same process there is little variance. People-centered examples in health care would be OB

patients, the outcomes vary as the length of labor as well as medications and process taken and

length of stay also varies. Another example is the surgery department where the procedures

vary, and the outcome, as well as the length of stays, vary. The Emergency Department falls

into this as severity and process and procedures vary. The examples demonst rate that both

production-centered and people-centered management are present in the health care industry,

however, the text mentions that people-centered is seen more throughout the health care

industry than production-centered management. However, as future health care leaders, it is

very important that we understand both and how they function in the industry (Fallon L., &

McConnell C, 2014)
