What a strange time period for a kid to be in when they go through adolescence. Just puberty alone is strange enough and happens so quickly relative to the few numbers of years they've been on the planet up until then. In such a short amount of time, they go from being completely dependent of their parents to having to prepare and, sort of, setup for their adulthood and the rest of their lives that they have no experience in even knowing anything about. They face weird changes to their bodies, more complex emotions, higher expectations, and standards, changing thoughts and opinions, identity formation, societal pressures, etc. I have developed more compassion and empathy for children in this class reading about them in all these chapters (Erford, 2017). I already had a sense that it was difficult, but I have a much better idea of that now. I was thinking about my adolescence since reading the chapters and considering the quiz, and I remember that time in my life and that it was hard, but also feeling like I was so much older than I was. Or more responsible, which makes complete sense because I had a limited knowledge of what responsibility was at that time. I probably was responsible for taking care of the limited things I had to take care of back then.

The part about depression being prevalent in adolescence was very sad to hear about (Erford, 2017). I don't think I realized it was so common, but after reading about it, it makes sense why, especially in terms of the egocentrism that was reference where adolescents believe their life experiences are unique and that no one has ever felt the way they do or would understand. It's really disheartening to imagine such young people feeling like they must take on the world and their experiences by themselves.
