Respond to one person no fewer than 75 words. Comment on how effectively they have integrated a quote.

1. At the beggining of the Novel we are introduced to the first and arguably the most alienated and isolated person in the community in The Bottom, Shadrack. Reddy explains how Shadrack came back so broken and a shell of his former self because of the war: "Suffering from what usually is euphemistically referred to as shell shock or battle fatigue but here is clearly presented as actual madness, the only possible response to the horrors of war, Shadrack is rapidly discharged from a veterans' hospital after an episode of violence. The chaos he has witnessed in the world seems to have invaded even his own body" (Reddy 4-5). This event in Shadracks' life would lead to alienation in The Bottom community and his yearly ritual National Suicide Day.

2. Nel's relationship with her mother is estranged firstly because of their differences in ideologies. During her childhood, Nel experiences racism when she sees her mother getting humiliated by a white conductor. Nel's mother response was as it follows : "We made a mistake, sir. You see there wasn't no sign. We just got in the wrong car, that's all Sir." (Chapter 1920, page 11) Nel also sees first-hand when her mother squats in the field for a short call while every passenger on the train is watching. Nel seeks freedom and self-realization by forming a friendship with Sula (Vickroy). However, her mother opposes that friendship because she believes that Sula is not a good role model for her daughter.

3. In the book "Sula" both girls are close friends. In the book, Nel stated that she felt betrayed by her friend Sula. "I was good to you, Sula, why don't that matter?" (144). Sula had an affair with Nel's partner and Nel felt some type of way. The real reason why Nel and Jude are not together is because Jude left Nel for Sula. Nel felt devoted to her and she feels that she isn't going to be able to rely on her best friend. At the end of the novel, Nel doesn't know what she wants but she realized that she needs Sula, not Jude.

4.   People face different challenges in their daily lives. Despite the challenges faced, however, coming out of the challenges is what matters most. In Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu argues that heaven is everlasting, and the earth is enduring (Miller). He acknowledges that life on earth is not perfect, and people endure through everyday struggle. He also argues that there is a better place where there is no endurance, an everlasting place. Lao Tzu also acknowledges thus the existence of spirituality in making life everlasting. According to him, the life of earth is about endurance because it lacks spirituality. He, therefore, believes that when people overcome the challenges they face in life, they will become victorious hence be regarded as saints.

5. Upon finding her spouse and her best friend having sex. Nel is at first confounded and accepts that her eyes are beguiling her. To what she commented “when I opened the door they didn’t even look for a minute and I thought the reason they are not looking up is because they are not doing that. So it’s all right. I am just standing here I am just standing here and seeing it, but they are not really doing it” (Morrison 105). Nel took it as a sign that nothing wrong is occurring but is quickly proven wrong when her husband looks up and walks out, announcing that he would come back for his things later.
