1. Discuss the four elements of goal setting.
SMART goals are the parameters that most people use to set goals, and the four elements discussed in the text Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience by Richard Hugues and colleagues use similar criteria. Successful goal setting requires goals to be specific and observable, attainable but challenging, require commitment, and need feedback (Huges et al., p. 461, 2021). In order to successfully track a goal and determine whether or not gains are made to accomplish it, the goal must have some measurement metric. If a goal is specific and observable, it is easy to see whether or not progress is being made. Additionally, if a goal is visible, feedback is plausible. Working toward a goal should be challenging in that is causes the person to grow or learn. If a goal is too easy, it is possible that the participant may lose interest or motivation. However, if the goal is challenging enough, it can create motivation.
1. What is the importance of providing constructive feedback? Review the "Improving Feedback Skills."
When an observer gives feedback, it is important that it be timely and specific so that it is helpful and the person on the receiving end of the feedback has an idea of where they have done well and where they can improve. If Being helpful can build relationships, and people are more likely to take feedback when they perceive it as helpful. Being direct and descriptive takes the guesswork out of what the person giving feedback means and allows someone to see exactly where the problem is or where they excelled, depending on the feedback needed. Coming full circle, being flexible is another way to realistically address feedback. Someone cannot take any kind of feedback if they are upset or in a heightened state of emotion. It is best to wait to give feedback until the recipient is ready and able to listen, and if not, it can be a waste of time for both parties: the receiver and the giver of the feedback.
1. Identify one element you will need to improve upon and what steps will you implement to get there?
The element that must work on the most is goal-setting feedback. This is my fourth year in my current position. Despite having the same position, there have been many changes in the past four years, including supervisors, job expectations, locations, etc. One way I plan on getting feedback on my specific goal is to add it to my district's professional development goal. This lets me put the goal before my immediate supervisor and get yearly feedback. My goal relates to a new approach to professional development. I can use various methods of feedback beyond my immediate supervisor as well. I plan to send a monthly survey to instructional staff to get feedback and adjust the plan as I go. Additionally, using student data to track how implementing the new approach to professional development is another metric that can help give feedback.
